UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
SUCCESSFUL CONCERT LAST EVENING.
Last evening, after church hours, a successful concert was held in the Theatre do Luxe to raise funds for unemployment relief. A collection was taken at tho doors and realised £22 Bs, a result very pleasing to those who organised the concert for such a good cause.
Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., chairman of the Unemployment Relief Committee, thanked the public for their support of the concert. The results, lie said, were very gratifying and had only been made possible by the generosity of Mr F. Jackson, who had promoted two concerts and provided the theatre free of charge. The programme had been arranged by Mrs Gilmour, who had placed her services at the disposal of the public of Palmerston North on more than one occasion. Mr Nash also thanked the orchestra which had given up its only free night for the cause, the other performers, Mr Baynes (theatre manager) and staff, and Mr A. J. Berryman who had given the free use of a piano and music stands and had borne the expense of cartage. Mr Nash added that the' St. Vincent de Paul Society was shortly arranging a further concert to raise funds to relieve unemployment. Those rendering items were Misses Myra Wilson and Doris Morgan and Mr Jack Murray, songs; Miss Dorothy Southey-Bakcr, violin solos; Mr C. Bell, xylophone solo. An instrumental trio was given by bliss Southey-Baker (violin), Mrs Gilmour (piano) and Mr C. G. Swallow (flute). These players also took their place in the orchestral well with Messrs J. Dale (’cello), A. W. Leet (bass), J. H. Mitchell (cornet), J. Elliott (trombone), and L. Findlay (violin).
