PURDY BEATEN IN FOURTH ROUND. WELTER TITLE TO HANCOCK. SYDNEY. June 7. At the Leichhardt stadium ito-niglit Wally Hancock (10.41) (Australia) knocked out Charlie Purdy (10.21) (New Zealand) in the fourth round. Hancock thus won the welter championship from the New Zealander. The contest was sensational. Purdy was the better boxer, but Hancock, who was very confident, used rights and lefts to the chin freely, while Purdy went for the body. He crouched low and escaped much punishment. Purdv opened Hancock’s eye in the third round. Hancock bled freely and seemed to go mad. The jfourth round opened full of promise. Hancock went after the New Zealander and landed successive rights and left to Purdy’s chin, which always seemed to be unguarded. Purdy dropped to the boards near the end of the round. He tried to rise, but was again sent down for the full count, the bell failing to save him.
