THE HOKIO ROAD
REPLY TO LEVIN. THE MINISTERIAL ATTITUDE. Mr T. McDonald, M.P., has received tho following reply from Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister for Public Works, to tho representations recently made in regard to the Hokio Road, states tho Levin Chronicle. “On tho occasion of my visit to Levin on the 6th April, you introduced a deputation from the Levin Borough Council regarding the main road connecting tho beach with the township. The deputation said that thq road was narrow end dangerous, and asked that some improvement be urgently undertaken. “As promised at the time, I have referred this matter to the Main Highways Board and have ascertained that the new road which Mr Goldsmith, a member of the deputation, referred to leaves the existing road about three-quarters of a mile from the beach, keeping to the south of the existing road and joining it again about 10 chains from the beach. “Tho advantage of this old road was that it avoided crossing tho Hokio Stream. It is understood at the present time that about 20 chains of this old road has been covered by drifting sand, and the remainder is merely a cart track. To form this half mile of new road would involve shifting a considerable quantity of sand and it would bo very hard to maintain afterwards on account of the drifting sand. “Generally speaking, a considerable amount of improvement could be mined out to the present road, but the matter is ono for tho consideration of tiie Ilorowheiiua County Council as much as for the Main Highways Board, for the reason that it would be necessary for tbe Horowhenua County Council to provide half the cost of any improvements. When the Horowhenua County Council brings forward a scheme for the improvement of the highway the Main Highways Board will consider making a subsidy available towards tho cost of any suen works.”
