The heaviest fog for many years was experienced locally on Thursday night. There was a fairly thick mist in the morning which only lifted for about an hour in the afternoon, after which it came down thicker than before, and by five o’clock it was impossible to see the 500 candle power street lamps at a hundred yards distance.

The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Woodville Lodge was held on Friday evening when N.G. Bro. Peebles presided over a fair number of members. The election of officers resulted as follows: —N.G., Sister Pilcher; Y.G., Bro. Young; warden, Sister Turner; guardian, Bro. Wakeford. The presentation was made by Mr Mahon, the new postmaster, and was suitablv acknowledged. BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.

Estimates were considered and dealt with in committee at a special meeting of the Woodville Borougli Council, the Mayor (Mr 11. P. Horne) presiding. Others presont were Crs. Pickering, McCormick, Johnston, Sutton, Nicholas, Harding, Machie and Rose.

The reports of meetings of the gasworks committee and the works and finance committee were read. The committee recommended : (1) That the council vote twothirds of the cost of lining the Fire Brigade sleeping quarters; (2) that the band room bo partly lined and the front doors altered; (3) that where summonses for rates or outstanding accounts are required to be issued, the town clerk be empowered to take the necessary action; (4) that a resident of Wellington be engaged to value the gasworks, to comply with the requirements of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1928; (5) that the council seriously consider the question of extraordinary water supply to business premises, schools, etc. ; (6) that the town clerk’s salary bo increased by £25 per annum as noxious weeds inspector as from Ist May, 1929. The first clause was adopted. In regard to the lining of the band room, it was decided that prices for the work bo obtained and brought before the next meeting of tho council. Clause 3 was adopted without comment. In reference to the valuaion of the gasworks, the Mayor stated that the balance-sheets were tagged because no allowance was made for depreciation. It was now compulsory that they establish a depreciation fund. —The recommendation of tho commendation of the committee in regard to a valuer was adopted.—A lengthy discussion took place upon clauso 5, relating to a proposal to supply water to certain business premises, schools, etc., by meter. It was eventually decided that the works committee bring down a report upon the question.

The Mayor stated that he had no doubt the Swimming Club would bo prepared to contribute the other third. Cr. Harding, that the works committee submit alternate reports in regard to the sewerage and a septic Wink.

In regard to the proposal to increase the salary of the town clerk by £25 per year, the Mayor stated that since the stock inspector had been removed Mr Keay had "jeon appointed noxious weed inspector for the borough, and this had involved a considerable increase in work. Tho recommendation of the committee was unanimously adopted. Permission was granted Mr F. Shearman to erect a signboard at the corner of Vogel and Ormond Streets. On the application of Mr W. A.
