Sir Alexander Herdman was born on July 17, 1869, being the soil of the late Alexander Herdman, a balik manager, and was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, and at Oamaru. After leaving school he entered the National Bank, but while a, clerk there ho studied law, being admitted a solicitor in 1894. He practised at Palmerston South and at Naseby. Two years later he married a daughtei ot Mr h. Smith, of Dunedin. .Sir Alexander Herdman early entered into public life, becoming a member of the Naseby Borough Council, and in 1898 Mayor. In 1902 he successfully contested the Mount Ida constituency. He was defeated, however, in the next Parliamentary election of 1905. He then moved to "Wellington, and continued the practice of the law. He later contested the Wellington North constituency in the Reform interests, and he was elected. He was returned at successive elections until 1918, when he resigned from the National Government tonned during the Great At ar (1914-18) to take his seat on the Judicial Bench of the Supreme Court. For six years before resigning from Parliament Sir Alexander Herdman was At-torney-General and Minister of Justice. SIR HENRY BUCKLETON. Sir Henry Buckleton, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, completed fifty years of service with than institution on December 15, 1928. Bom in Sydney on January 4, 1864, the son of Air George Buckleton, an Australian journalist Sir Henry Buckleton commenced his career with the Bank of New Zealand at its Sydney branch, on Decembei 16, 1878, a boy of 15. lie remained in the Sydney branch until his transfer to the Melbourne branch as acting-accountant, in December, 1891 1 In May of the following year lie came to New Zealand as accountant in the Bank at Hamilton. In the following year he was appointed accountant to the Bank at Auckland. In 1901 lip was promoted to be manager at New Plymouth, and in November, 1905, lia acted as chief inspector at head office, AVellington. From 1906 to 1919 he was manager for the Bank at Auckland, being appointed general manager in 1919. He did not, however, take over the duties attaching to that office until February 1, 1920. DR L. COCKAYNE, C.M.G.

Dr Leonard Cockayne, C.M.G., Ph.D., F.R.S., F.N.Z.inst., F.L.S., was born in Derbyshire, England, in 1855, the youngest son of the late William Cockayne, merchant. He was educated privately, going later to Owen’s College, now the Manchester University. • in 1879 he went out to Australia as a school teacher. In 1881 lie arrived in New Zealand, when lie joined the teaching staff of the Tokomairiro District 1 High School, where he remained until 1885. During that period he conducted a private experimental farming station near Christchurch. Since 1888 he has devoted all his time to research on the flora and vegetation of New Zealand, and exploring botanically most parts of the Dominion, including the Chatham and Sub-Antarctic Islands. From 1906 onwards Dr Cockayne made important botanical surveys for tile Land and Survey Department, and made reports on reclamation of sand dunes, Kapiti Island, the Waipoua kauri forest, the Tongariro National Park, and Stewart Island. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Forestry in 1913,'0f the Cawthron Commission, 1919, and of the Pastoral Commission in 1920. MR R. E. HAYES, C.M.G.

Mr It. E. Hayes, C.M.G., 1.5.0., was born in Dunedin in ]869, and joined the Public Service as a cadet in 1885 at Dunedin. He was transferred in 1890 to the head office of the General Post Office. In 1903 lie was appointed accountant of the newlyestablished Department of Tourists and Industries and Commerce, and three years later was promoted as permanent head of the Friendly Societies’ Department. In 1910 the National Provident Act was passed and entrusted to him for organisation. In 1922 Mr Hayes was promoted to the position of Assistant-Secretary to the Treasury, and three years later became Paymas-ter-General, Secretary to the Treasure, and Registrar of Inscribed Stock. His Majesty in 1926 conferred the honour of Companionship of the Imperial Service Order on Mr Hayes.

Mil F. W. ROWLEY, 1.5.0. Mr F. W. Rowley, 1.5.0., has been secretary of 'the Labour Department since 1913. He was born in Canterbury in 1874, and was educated there. fiLJ 01 ued the Labour Department in load, shortly after it was established. At that time the staff consisted of 6even, four in Wellington and an inspector in each of the other three centres. He was appointed successively senior clerk, accountant, chief clerk, inspector of factories, deputy-chief inspector of factories, and subsequently chief-inspector, deputyregistrar of unions, and then registrar of unions.
