NO RATES FROM SECTION.
“THE HUNDRETH CASE.”
COUNCIL TO CEASE ACTION
MORRINSVJLLE, May 31 A position possibly unique in the history of borough councils was discussed at the last meeting of the Morrinsvil!-. Borough Council, when the borough solicitors advised that, as - outstanding rates on an unoccupied section could not be collected, a judgment summons had been taken out. This had not been satisfied and the council now had the option of selling the section to meet the rates. However, the circumstances were unusual in that were the section offered for sale by auction it Was extremely unlikely that there would be a purchaser, as the land was practically valueless, being only a gully. The council would be out of pocket through hav. ing to pay advertising and other expenses. The advice of the solicitors was to leave the section covered by the summons and not to attempt to sell
it. . : The Mayor said that in 99 cases out of 100 a local body could secure at least the value of the rates by yelling. This was the hundredth case. He thought the solicitors’ advice should lie followed. This was agreed to by the council
