STEAMER SUSSEX
DAMAGE TO CARGO. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 27. The steamer Sussex, on which a fire occurred at Java on April 26, arrived to-day. About 1600 tons of cargo in Nos. 4 and 5 holds were burned or badly’ damaged. No. 4 hold, in which the fire was actually located, had to be flooded with the assistance of the firefioat at Samarang and the water leaked through into No. 5 hold, which also became filled with water. The task of fighting the fire occupied about 48 hours and the officers and engineers were completely exhausted, their work being made the more strenuous because of there being only a few white people at Samarang, and assistance having to be obtained from natives. The amount of water in the holds caused the vessel to -develop a heavy list and she had to be anchored in shallow water near the beach in case she should capsize. The water was subsequently pumped out and the cargo from Nos. 4 and 5 holds was discharged, at Somabaya. After unloading a quantity of cargo for Auckland the Sussex is to sail for Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin to-morrow fo complete the discharge of her cargo. A general average will have to be paid on the cargo brought to New Zealand, but the amount has not been declared.
