BRITISH ELECTION.

PARTY LEADERS ON TOUR. VIGOROUS CAMPAIGN. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 15. The election campaign is proceeding vigorously in all parts of the country, oyer 1000 meetings being held every night. The leaders of the great parties are throwing themselves with energy into the campaign, many of their speeches being relayed. The Prime Minister’s tour of the West of England includes a visit today to Newport, where he will address an open-air demonstration, at which it is anticipated between 20,000 and 30,000 people will be present. Tonight his speech at the public hall in Cardiff will he relayed to another openair meeting. To-morrow Mr Baldwin will return to London for further meetings. Mr Ramsay Macdonald’s 800-mile tour of Scotland began yesterday. Even greater distances will be covered in the Labour leader’s tour of England next week.

Mr Lloyd George left London yesterday morning, and spoke at Llandudno, North Wales, at night. All three parties recognise the need of making a special effort to enlist the sympathy and support of the new women electors. Miss Megan Lloyd George and Mrs Wintringliam have already broadcast for the Liberals; tonight Miss Margaret Bondfield, who was the first woman of this country to be appointed to Ministerial office, will broadcast for Labour, and on Friday night the Duchess of Atlioll will present the Conservative case, particularly as it affects women and children.

Particulars of the new register for tire whole of Scotland, now completed, show that the total electors for the country is 2,900,000 compared with 2,300,000 in 1924. The number of women voters has increased by 600,000. Male voters are in the majority in only 15 out of the 70 Scottish constituencies.' SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTIONS. (Australian Press Association). CAPETOWN, May IS. Nominations for the general election closed on Wednesday. Only eight candidates are unopposed in 148 constituencies. All are of the South African Party—four in the Cape and four in Natal.
