(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, May 16. The ordinary meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt), Urs. Hydo, Thwaites, Downes, Hook, Curran, junr., Anderson, Laurvig and J. Curran, senr. On the motion of Cr, Thwaites, seconded by Cr. Curran, junr., Cr. Hyde was elected deputy-May,or for the ensuing term. The local Football Club wrote asking the council to considor tho request of moving the present lights in the Domain to a more suitable position and installing five additional lights. If the scheme submitted by tho "club wero carried out, the whole of the football ground would be sufficiently lighted, and tno cycling track and grounds would be suitablo for evening sports. Tho club offered to donate £5 towards tho cost. It was resolved to meet representatives from the various sports bodies to discuss tho mattor.

Tho Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote asking for a grant to purchase a now hydrant.—-Grant of £lO made. The town clerk, Palmerston North, wrote inviting tho Mayor and councillors to bo present at tho lecture on town planning on Friday, 31st inst., to be given by Mr J. W. Mawson, director of Town Planning.—Accepted with thanks. A request from the Shannon Golf Club for the loan of tho borough’s horso lawn mower was granted. The estimates for the ensuing year wero adopted. The estimates provide for the employment of an extra man, whose duties will include those of ranger, dog tax-collec-tor, water inspection, and the getting of metal froili streams in place of the council purchasing metal. The road committee in their report stated, with reference to the petition received last meeting from residents in tho vicinity of Stafford Strcot asking for the formation of a footpath, that they could not recommend this work to be carried out at present, as footpaths were more urgently needed in thickly populated places. Tho committee recommended that footpath formation be carried out as follows: —Vanco Street (Plimmer Terraco to Margaret Street), Grey Street (Plimmer Terruce to Vogel Street). The suggestion from the Mangahao Lodge offering to provide culverts and the council have same put in and covered, thus enabling cars to be parked clear of tho motal road, was agreed to. With reference to the unsatisfactory condition of the bridge over Stansell’s Drain leading to Mr Wilkinson’s property, instructions wero giveq to erect a notice that the bridge is unsafe for all traffic. The cost of putting this bridgo in order would bo from £3O to £4O and, as the bridgo serves one houso, the committee were of the opinion that the expenditure was not warranted!—The report was adopted. On the motion of Cr. Thwaites it was resolved to give tho manufacture of concrete blocks a trial and tho cost of same compared with tar-sealing footpaths will be ascertained.
