( y -WELLINGTON, Apnl A further development has taken nlace in the correspondence school e, rnblished by the Education Department in 1922 to meet 'the needs of children in remote country districts. A second, ary division has now been organised m Wellington so that the benefits ol fuller education may be available to bad, blocks children who desire it The primary department, wlmli caters for children who are too far away from a primary school to attend n each day, has now passed the exp el . mental stage and many of the pupils have taken the course from primer I. to standard VI. Requests that the d, partment should extend its courses t<» meet the requirements ol children whose parents wished them to continue secondary school studies began to be made and the department finally decided to meet the demand for a secondary correspondence department. Four courses have now' been drawn up from which' the children may choose, and already the first two sets of fortnightly lessons have been sent out m the 80 pupils enrolled. The courses have been evenly patronised and are: (1). l'our year.', course at the end of which the pupils cquld be well qualified to sit for the matriculation examination which gives entrance to the university; f2) three years’ course which prepares pupils to the standard required for the public service and senior free place examinations ; (3) one year’s course of a purely cultural nature which does not prepare the student for any examination whatever; (4) one year part course to nieet the case of pupils who, while desiring to continue their studies for another year, are pressed for time. Agricultural science and housecraft are included on ( j,he syllabus for each course.
