RACING CARNIVAL.

THE EASTEB MEETINGS.

BRIGHT GLOW WINS AT AUCKLAND.

STAR AREA SUCCESSFUL AT . FEILDING. Several of the club’s commenced their Easter meetings on Saturday and some interesting- racing- was witnessed. At Feilding Star Area won the Manchester Handicap while Bright Glow was successful at Auckland. Hew Zealand horses at the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting at Eandwick achieved several successesj amongst them being that of Limerick in the Autumn Stakes.

RACING AT FEILDING. STAR AREA WINS HANDICAP. THE RAIDER CAPTURES OPEN SPRINT. TIALCOMBE HANDICAP TO JEANETTE. Following upon the heavy rain of Good Friday, tho Feilding Jockey Club was indeed fortunate to enjoy fine weather for the opening day of its autumn fixture on Saturday, tho course having improved, if anything, as the result of tho downpour. There was a large crowd in attendance and betting was brisk throughout, the sum of £31,610 being handled lor the day as compared with £30,521 for the corresponding day last year —an increase of £IOB9. The Raider, who has scored in tho Scott Memorial Handicap at. the Bulls meeting, captured the Mangaono Handicap from another consistent performer in Dobbin, with Benzora in third berth, the trio all having had recent successes to their credit, Dobbin having won on the second day at Bulls and on the concluding day at Manawatu, while Benzora had won on tho opening day at tho latter fixture. A stirring finish saw Star Area prevail in tho Manchester Handicap from Orazone by the barest of margins. The final event —tho Halcombe Handicap —witnessed tho defeat of a very warm favourite in Manly, the Archiestown gelding being beaten into third place by Jeanette and Vivo after having had every chance to carry his host of backers through. AWAPUNI TO THE FORE. With Sir Moment and Hymestrason dropping out, there were eight runnels to contest tho ICawa Ivawa Hurdles and tho two Awapuui representatives, Locarno (£890) and Rod Bank (£435) were installed the favoured candidates and they both proved worthy of tho faith imposed for they filled first and second berths at tho finish. Airtight was smartest to begin from Fairone, Locarno and Royal' Acre, but before the

A STIRRING FINISH. Gold Cure and Manly failed to reach the post in tho Manchester Handicap, a bare two dividend field resulting. Star Area (£1176) was installed a firm favourite from [Merry Damon (£781) and Joy Bird (£737). From an excellent despatch Joy Bird wont to the front to pilot Star Area, Avro, Briar Root, Orazone and Merry Damon as they passed through tho straight and into tho back, the wholo field racing at half length intervals. Approaching tho half mile post Merry Damon and Orazono commenced to move up to the leaders, Joy Bird and Star Area being on terms as they came into tho straight with Merry Damon and Orazone at their heels. Tho issuo appeared to bo in doubt at the distance, but Star Area finished the strongest to win by a long neck from Orazono with Merry Damon, who ddi not experience tho freest of passages in tho straight, a neck away and just ahead of Joy Bird. Briar Root was right up fifth with Avro last to finish. LUCKY RUN ON THE RAILS.

Naselle, Ngawhonc, Hard Gold, Seamstress, Grattan, II dp wood, Black Acre and Mademoiselle wore defections from the Maiden Stakes, but the good field of 14 runners nevertheless remained, tho publfc selecting Malahat (£953) as their favourite, there being smaller money for Clover Leaf (£395) and Warzone (£356). Wine Tray .pimped out smartly at the lift of ta®es tio lead Oral, Latakia, Malahat and Gambler along to tho turn where Gambler improved his position, Wine Tray being, however, still in the van from Gambler, Latakia, Oral, Malahat, and Some Acre as they turned into the straight. The favourite was lucky enough to squeeze through on the rails and in tho run tio the post he steadily overtook the leaders to get up and win by half a length from Oral with Gambler a neck away. Then came Somo Acre, Warzone and Clover Leaf. Tho win of Malahat brought another sucess to Awapuni and gave A, G. Murray a winning mount prior to his departing for Riccarton where ho is due to ride on Monday. ATHOLSPEAR AGAIN SUCCESSFUL. With Zippor, Gasnappcr, Acred, First Ruler and Merry Mixture absentees from the Onepuhi Hack Handicap, Thrift (£1043) was elected favourite witli Kawiiakina. (£799) mid Atholspear (£644) next in demand. Atholspear led out from the barrier, but immediately gave way to Calamine and the pair led Thrift, Aurora Borealis and Warflame out of the straight, Bal. loon being in tho rear. Going along the back Calamine was showing the way to Thrift, Aurora Borealis, Kawhakina and Kilorell, but rounding the top Kawhakina

straight was readied Locarno had assumed cnarge from Fairone', Otauru Lass and Airtight. Some of tho jumpers were not fencing at all cleanly, and going into the back, Red Bank and Royal Acre deposed Fairone, Otauru Lass and Airtight, it being evident a long way from home that the finish would ho between the trio. Passing tho half mile post Red Bank and Locarno drew away from Royal Acre and they came into the straight in that order. Rod Bank flattered his backers momentarily, but Locarno experienced little difficulty in securing a half length advantage to hold it to the post. Two and a half lengths bnck came Royal Aero, with Fairone and Onward well clear of Otauru Lass and Harrowgate. The rider of Fairone made a great recovery at the final fenco after being right out of tho saddle. RICHFIELD WINS WELL.

ajid Ath°l6p ea r moved up and were attending Calamine and Thrift at the straight entranoe. Thrift wrested the lead from Calamine only to be joined by Kawhakina and Atholspear, thh last named getting through on the rails, and over tho final pinch Atholspear secured the advantage to win by a head from ■ Kawhakina, who was a neck in front of Calamine, Thrift dropping back to fill fourth place. Aurora. Borealis, Balloon, Wnrflame and Kilorell was the order thereafter. Atholspear, . who had scored at Awapuna, was allowed to pay a false price.

I The good field of 16 runners was presented in the Ongo Hack Handicap in which Seamstress was the sole defection. The bracketed pair, Grand Acre and Fee Simplo (£627) wound up slightly better favourite than Coolmint (£617) and Inflamo (£507), but a surprise was forthcoming when Richfield drew away in the run home to win very comfortably. Inflamo was, as usual, the smartest to begin and the Lord Quex gelding led Feo Simplo, Airway, Boundary and Coolmint along the back. Callapat, Richfield and Grand Aero improved their positions crossing the top and at tile dis-1 tanco Callapat promised to bo the winner, but the Callaghan gelding died away badly and Richfield shot out to finish full of running two and a half lengths'ahead of Coolmint, who got up to beat Inflamo by threo parts of a length. White Ringlet was fourth with Feo Simple and Ali Baba next.

THE RAIDER WINS ALL THE WAY. All eight acceptors went to the post in the Mangaone Handicap in ■which The Raider (£916) was the popular fancy with Royal Damon (£751) and Benzora (£685) next ill request, and tho favourite duly prevailed comfortably from the equally consistent Dobbin. The Raider, from No. 1 position at the post, jumped out to pilot Dobbin, Ilidgemount, Royal Damon and 1 Benzora along the back, but rounding the

top Limited headed Benzora and Royal Damon only to lose his position a furlong later. The Raider was bowling along •in front- approaching the straight entrance, Dobbin being ahead of Benzora and Ridgomount and, in the;run to the judge’s box, the favourite was not seriously pressed to prevail by a length and a-half from Dobbin, who beat Benzora —the latter having run a somewhat erratic course in tho straight—by a neck with another half length to Keddar. Royal Damon was fifth with Limited ahead of Ridgeinount, Whenuauni and Some Red, the last named pair been slow to move.

OUTSIDER PREVAILS. Another full field was presented in the Taonui Hack Handicap, all nine acceptors going to the post. Warfille (£1107) was backed down to a short price, there being smaller money for Desert Lad (£697) and Acred (£605). Starting from the corner at the foot of the straight Whisogne, from the inside position, was first away from Kosher, Royal Black und Warfille, Desert Lad having been last to move from the oxtreme outside of tho field. However, the last-named ran up to his field along the back and was with Whisogne and Royal Black as they turned for home, Warfille, Acred - and Patearoa being next in attendance. At the distance Desert Lad retired, Royal Black shooting out with Warfille in pursuit and, in a punishing finish, Royal Black hung on to score his first victory by a neck from Warfille, with a gap of two lengths to Acred. Whisogne was fourth with Patearoa ahead of Desert Lad.

HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN. With Manly preferring the Halcombe Handicap to his Manchester Handicap engagement, the public accepted the preference on tho part of tho connections of the Archiostown gelding as a good omen und tho topweight was backed with confidence, being entrusted with £1709, there being a marked drop to Vivo (£795)' and J3is-< courso (£762). However, the “good thing’’ failed to materialise, Manly being beaten into third place at the finish. Jeanette led Manly, Vivo, Road Hog, Discourse and Sovena out of the straight, but tho lastnamed raced up to the van along the back to lead Jeanette, Manly, Vivo and Discourse to the straight entrance. Sovena and Jeanette were the first to straighten out, but, to the consternation of backers, Manly failed to get up, Jeanette winning nicely by two lengths from Vivo, who topped'the favourite off by a length over the last few yards. Attending Manly camo Discourse and Sovona with Road Hog whipper-in.
