MALTA’S GOVERNOR.

DISPUTE WITH CHURCH. REPORT OF EXCOMMUNICATION. (Australian Press Association.) Received March 3, 9.5 a.m. ROME, March 1. Tho Corriere D’ltalia states definitely that Sir Gerald Strickland, Governor of Malta, has been excommunicated for “conduct hostile to the Church’s ecclesiastical institutions.” His excommunication does not need to be publicly or formally announced. REPORT DENIED. (Australian Press Association). Received March 3, 9.5 a.m. MALTA, March 2. Sir Gerald Strickland denies the report that he has been excommunicated. ; M. Bartolo, Minister of Migration, in defining the respective spheres of civil and ecclesiastical jurisdiction, made clear to the Senate that nothing would side-track the Government from protecting a British subject from banishment from British territory and his own country under the pretext of religious discipline. Public opinion is strongly behind the Government.
