Cooke and Herbert Smith are here in connection with the inquiry being conducted by a committee ot the League in>co the world coal problem. Professor Tawnay, of the School of Economics, London, yesterday made a statement on the situation in Britain. He dwelt on the subject of unemployment. The Labourites who are giving evidence have been chosen by the international Labour Office as technical experts, not as representatives of the Gabour interests. In the meantime the International Miners’ Federation is urging a scheme for a permanent international organisation to deal with coal production, consumption and marketing, and to include representatives of Governments, workers, employers and consumers. POSITION IN N.S.W. THOUSANDS IDLE. OWNERS TIRED OF WHOLE BUSINESS. Received March 1, 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 28. Every coal mine in the Northern Colliery Association closes to-morrow at three o’clock, when more than 11,000 miners will be thrown idle. The attitude of the men's executive at the recent conference at Canberra will not be accepted by the owners as an excuse to vithdraw the notices. The owners are very determined and declare that they are sick and tired ot the way the miners have been acting for a long time. Business men in Newcastle, Maitland and Cessnock will receive a staggering blow when the mines close.
