SWIMMING CARNIVAL

APOLLO CLUB’S MEETING

IN MUNICIPAL BATHS.

An excellent programme of events Tras presented by the Apollo Amateur Swimming Club last evening, when its first carnival was held, at tho municipal baths. Fast times and close finishes were recorded and entries were good. The club lias made very good progress since its inception and if future carnivals are conducted in the same manner their complete success is assured. Tho public attendance was slightly disappointing. In opening the carnival, tho Mayor, Mr A. J. Graham, regretted that there was not a larger attendance. The Apollo Swimming Club was a branch of the Apollo gymnasium and physical culture recently formed, and both the club and Mr Lewis deserved every support for their work in affording the youth of the town facilities for physical culture and manly sport. Mr Graham wished Mr Lewis and the club every success and hoped that tho programme that evening would provide very interesting racing. DETAILED RESULTS.

Surprising exhibitions were given by the children at the Terrace End School’s annual swimming sports yesterday afternoon, being a considerable improvement over the even high standard of last year. Constant coaching and the scholars’ enthusiasm have been for the betterment of the art at the schools, which should be able to hold its own against swimming competition from any other local school. An excellent showing was made at the Centro championship meeting on Saturday , some good placings being secured, and the school possesses swimmers who will be heard of later. Cameron, chairman of the committee, expressed gratification at the use made of the memorial baths and stated that they desired the scholars to use the baths as frequently as possible. Much had been done to teach the children to swim and the results were particularly pleasing. lated for their enthusiasm in teaching the children to swim, while credit wai? duo to Mr Campbell and his assistants for the capablo manner in which the sports had been conducted. Cheers were then given for the teaching staff, and Mr Cameron presented the following prizes Senior championship, boys: R. Tims was awarded Mr Oxborough’s trophy, as was Nancy Wood, winner of the girls’ championship. In the learners’ section R. Carter and J. Grace received the Lasswade Hospital nurses’ trophies for the best boy and girl. The Weston-Smith Shield for a speed race went to V. Schultz. Those in charge of the sports were: Director, Mr F. C.
