RACING AT DANNEVIRKE.
HIGH COURT WINS CUP RACE.
OPEN SPRINT TO YAST ACRE.
A brig-lit warm day with a track firm and fast greeted the Dannevirke Racing Club yesterday for the opening of its autumn fixture when there was a crowd of good dimensions in attendance. In common with sister clubs, an increase was recorded in the totalisator returns for the day, the sum of £13,939 being handled as compared with £11,475 for the corresponding day last year.
Probably owing • to the hardness of the surface of tho track, scratchings in the various events were somewhat numerous, the original field in the Cup race being reduced to eight runners. In the absence of Anolo, Tho Swell and Kilmezzo, Locarno was the public’s elect, but the winner turned up in High Court, who won nicely from the Awapuni representative at the business end with Gaze in third berth. Another poor field was produced in tho President’s Handicap in which Vast Acre, who ranked as a firm favourite, was in the van throughout, to win from Dobbin, with Plimmcrton and Tanagra dead-heat-ing for third money, four of the five runners thus sharing in the stake distribution.
BREAK 0’ DAY IMPROVES. Novar (£471) was installed a firm favourite for the Highweight Handicap in which Lady Gay and Mandarine failed to put in an appearance, there being a substantial drop to Panorama (£247) and the ultimate winner, Break o’ Day (£231). Asleep went out to make the pace from Braeman and Panorama with Break o’ Day and Novar together in behind. Going along the back Braeman ranged alongside Asleep, while Panorama and Break o’ Day also moved forward, the favourite dropping back. Asleep and Braeman were still on terms at the straight entrance, but the former then retired, Break o’ Day going to the front. Twenty yards from home Braeman responded to pressure and promised to be the winner, but Break o’ Day held tho challenger off to win by a head, there being a gap of two lengths to Birkbeck. Panorama was fourth with Novar next to finish. THE FAVOURITE LUCKY. Propaganda (£459) was installed favourite for the Maiden Plate, although there was good support for Snowshoe St. Melba, from the inside position at the barrier, was first out, but was immediately joined by Propaganda, Snowshoe and Streamer. However, Tenure and Waiorua joined Propaganda and Streamer crossing the top and the quartette turned for homo just ahead of Snowshoe. A great struggle ensued in the run to the post, the favourite being required to do his best to hold off Snowshoe, while right on the post Malahat came from the ruck with a great finshng effort and appeared to snatch the vetory. However, the judge gave first placing to Propaganda with the Awapuni representative second and Snowshoe third, the last-named being a neck back. Blackpool was fourth with Streamer ahead of St. Melba, Gold Medal and Skill. THE FAVOURITE BEATEN. In the absence of The Swell, Anolo and Kilmezzo from tho Cup, the public went strongly for Locarno (£506) with Briar Root, '(£365) and King Willonyx (£363) next in demand. Passing through the straight Royal Lineage was clear of Briar Root with High Court on terms with Locarno, and they raced in that order into the back where it was evident that the saddle on tho pacemaker had slipped forward on to his shoulders. Half a mile from home Locarno and Briar Root moved up to the leader, but Royal Lineage again went away to lead the other pair into the straight, High Court, King Willoynx and Rowley being handy. At the distance Locarno was in front, but Over the final pinch High Court finished the strongei and drew clear to win by a length and a half with a similar distance between the favourite anti Gaze, who got lip in time to take third honours from Briar Root. King Willonyx was fifth with Rowley next. The" race was slow over tho early stages, tho time returned only equalling that of the highweight event.
DELUDE AT LAST. The scratching pencil reduced tho field in the Tahoraite Hack Handicap to 10 runners, Atholspear, Topere, Full Mark and Lady Spear being the defections. Imperial Fame jumped out at the barrier rise to pilot Boundary, Volplane, Archeria and Motliplane along the back, but crossing the top Archeria and Delude moved forward, the latter being first to straighten out for homo with Imperial Fame ahead of Tunbridge- and Mothplane, tho favourite being badly placed on the rails. In the run to the judge’s box Delude and Mothplane had tho finish to themselves, but Delude held off the unlucky Warplane filly to win by a length. Tunbridge was a similar distance back in third berth with Archeria ahead of Repay and Imperial Fame. The winner had shown promise of getting on tho winning fist for sortie time, but had raced somewhat unluckily.
A PROCESSION. Only five runners went to tho post in tho Rakaiatai Nursery Handicap, My Owen, Ben Hur, Lady Day and Gatilex having been withdrawn. Glasslough (£284) wound up favourite from Te Awha (£247) and San Quex (£240), but backers of the favourite were never flattered at any stage of the journey. San Quex was first out at the lift of the tapes from Te Awha and Glasslough, but the first-named pair were clear crossing the bop and, once landed in the straight, they drew right away. Over tho last pinch To Awha revealed a great turn of speed and ran clean away from San Quex, there being a three length margin at the post with another gap of six lengths to Gay Virginia. Killogio was fourth with tho favourite last.
A RAGGED DESPATCH. Bernera, Grey Mist, Wee Night and Black Acre were withdrawn from the Oringi Hack Handicap in which Australis (£37<i) was but slightly better favoured than Warlille (£370) with Sylvan Dell (£288) next in demand. A ragged despatch saw Shortly, Monetize and" Tutira badly left, Merry Mixture and Patearoa showing the way to Australis, Austerity and Sylvan Deli to tho turn and across the top, the solo change being that Sylvan Dell had worked in behind the two leaders, while Shortly had also made up a largo measure of his leeway. Patearoa was in the van inside tho distance, but Sylvan Dell, following her receiving an interrupted run, came again to get up and win by a head from Patearoa. with Shortly two lengths back. Warfillo was fourth with Merry Mixture, Tutira and Australis next. IN THE VAN THROUGHOUT. The President’s Handicap was robbed of much of its interest by reason of the withdrawal of Ridgeinount, King Willonyx, Bonogne, Vigilance, Borsalene and Queen’s Choice. Vast Acre (£624) was installed a firm favourite from Plimmerton (£406) and Dobbin (£335) and backers of t»io Acre maro were confident right from the barrier rise for, jumping out smartly, she led Willow Wai, Plimmorton and Dobbin past the four furlong post. Dobbin worked into second berth crossing the top and, once landed into tho straight, lodged a challenge, but the favourite held her position to win by a length, Plimmorton and Tanagra crossing the line on terms four lengths back, DISRANK WINS HACK EVENT. A field of eight runnors was presented in tho Makirikiri Hack Handicap, Abisogne, Balloon, General Wai, Cobham and Birkbeck failing to fulfill their engagements. Disrank (£567) was installed favourite, although there was good money for Topere (£515) with a drop thereafter to Red Fuchsia (£385). Topero was tho first to break the lino from Disrank, Wilmoreana, Red Fuchsia, Kilorell and Primax. There was little change crossing the top where tho field was well bunched, Topere and Disrank being still together at the entrance with Wilmoreana, Primax and Aurora Borealis next. Once straightened out fol* homo, Disrank went to the front from Topere with Kilorell coming through
on the rails. The favourite, however, retained his position to win nicely by half a length from Kilorell, who got up in time to take second money by a neck from Topere. Red Fuchsia was fourth with Aurora Borealis and Primax next. THE DETAILED RUNNERS.
