FEILDING NEWS

MANCHESTER STREET SCHORL. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Feb. 14. Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick presided over the monthly meeting of the Manchester Street School Committee on Tuesday night. The headmaster, Mr R. L. Mcllroy, reported that the school resumed on February 4 after the holidays with an attendance of 417 and a roil number of 475. Thirty-nine new pupils had been admitted and close on 70 had left, including 54 of last year’s Standard VI. As regards the staff Mr Mcllroy stated that Misses D. Tregurtha and R. Henaghan and Mr RHurdle left at the end of last year. Mr J. H. Thomas took up duty as assistant in place of Mr McClellan, and Miss I. Malcolm and Mr F. R. Sharplin returned to the school as probationary assistants.

The committee accorded Mr Hurdle a vote of thanks for the interest he has taken in the agricultural plot at the school.

In view of the fact that the infant mistress has one class of 75 children the committee decided to apply for an extra teacher. It was also resolved to apply for more bicycle accommodation for tho girls and for screens to be placed over the windows on the western side of the .school. The headmaster stated that the savings bank scheme had been very successful last year and would begin again next Monday.

PLUNKET SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Foilding branch of the Plunket Society was held on Tuesday, Mrs Sugden presiding. Miss Itowe, the relieving nurse, reported nine new cases for the month and that 131 adults, 98 infants and 27 older children had visited the rooms; also that 106 homes had been visited in addition to the sub-stations. Owing to the holidays, the visitors to the rooms had decreased considerably. Donations were received with thanks from the following: Mrs F. H. Stockwell £2 2s, Mrs R. L. Langdon ss, Mrs Phillips ss, Mrs Lawrence ss, Mrs A. Short ss.

TENNIS. The first, round of the Haythorne Cup was played at Kimbolton on Sat; urday when Kimbolton defeated Apiti by 18 sets to sLx. GENERAL ITEMS. In the final of the putting competition held in conjunction with last week’s carnival, E. G. Goodbehere defeated J. Graham yesterday over 18 holes by two up. . Inspector Hugo paid an official visit to the Feilding Fire Brigade on Tuesday night. The annual billiard match for the Colev Shield will be played between the FeilcUng and Foxton Fire Brigades to-night.
