INITIALS ON SHOP WINDOW.
MAN CHARGED AT WAIHI.
• WAIHI, Feb. 13. In .the Magistrate s Court a young man {named Robert A. Samways, on remand, was charged with wilfully damagmg a plate-glass window valued at £lO 10s ,aud a showcase, at the premises of A. H. Clark, fancy goods dealer and stationer. Samways was further charged with a breach of the terms of his release on probation. Mr 1 Clarke, for accused, entered a plea of guilty. Sergeant Cahvell said that the accused! was discharged from tin? Borstal Institute in 1928 on license. For reasons given in his report he could not recommend probation. Samways was apparently under the influence of drink- when he inscribed his initials on the plate-glass window with a glasscutter. He understood the window would have to be replaced. He reeommtfiided reformatory detention. Samwhys had a fairly good upbringing and tb a certain extent had supported his mother.
MriClarke said Samways aparently did not appreciate the serious nature of till? offence. Counsel suggested probation, concurrent with the present term..
Thef magistrate, Mr F. W. Platts, said tie would consider the matter, and give his decision later.
