The work done in the school was of a very high order as the inspectors' reports and the examination. results, showed. In the proficiency examinations all the pupils were successful. In sport tho girls' hockey team had done exceptionally well, being runners-up to Manchester Street School, Feilding, for the Carthew Cup which the local team had held for the previous two years, losing this year by a "knock behind" after extra time had ben played. Last year only throe attendance certificates had been awarded, but this year there were nine. Still, it could ■be a great deal better than that. Mr Boswell, referring to the proficiency examination, especially congratulated Noel Prebble on his fine effort. Ho was an example for the other pupils, and 6howed how difficulties could be overcome by working hard and taking the greatest interest in his studies so that he earned his certificate. He asked Mr Parlane's acceptance of a tangible token of their esteem (a gold cigarette case). Mr Parlane suitably replied, and stated that without the help of the pupils who one and all had "played the gamo" in every way, he would have been able to do little. Their excellent conduct and diligence during tho eighteen months he had been in charge of the school were a credit to them and made his work a pleasure. Ho thanked them very much and trusted they would all enjoy the holidays. All the children present were then given an orange and a bag of sweets, the tiny tots under, school age also receiving a picture book each. Afternoon tea was then provided for all present by committee members' wives and other willing helpers, and a very pleasant afternoon was brought to a close.

Haymaking has been somewhat interrupted by the recent bad weather, and Christmas will find many farmers still very busy with the work. Mrs L. A. Whitham, the wife of our local postmaster, has gone to Eltham with her mother, Mrs Taylor, to recuperate after a recent severe operation. We wish Mrs Whitham a speedy return to good health.

Miss E. M. Phillips, assistant teacher at the school, leaves to-day by car for her home in Gisborne. Mr S. G. Parlano (head teacher) arid Mrs Parlane and family are also leaving to-day for Auckland, where their holidays will be .spent with Mr Parlane’s brother at Devonport.
