PETITION FORWARDED.
BY CAMPBELL STREET RESIDENTS. CONDITION OF ROAD. Alleging that Campbell Street, a bus route, was at present in a most deplorable condition owing to pot holes caused by heavy traffic, representations for the tarring and sandingof its whole length were made in a petition signed by 66 ratepayers and residents, and forwarded to the Borough Council last evening. The Mayor stated that there was no alternative but to refer the matter to next year’s estimates. Cr. Canton supported the petition, saying that he was directly responsible for its presentation. The borough engineer, Mr J. R. Hughes, said he did not consider- that the road was particularly bad. Some fine shingle had been laid on it. Cr. Hodgens suggested that it be a recommendation to the mcomiim council to give Campbell Street first consideration. Reconditioning cost money which the council could not afford. If the road could not be surfaced with bitumen, it could be treated in similar manner to a section of Ferguson Street: The petition was received.
