PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, The General Assembly of tho Presbyterian Church of New Zealand will open its annual sessions in St. David’s Church, Auckland, this ovening. The subject of the inaugural address, which will then be delivered by the modera-tor-elect, Rih. Rev. Professor William Hewitson, of Knox College, Dunedin, will bo, “The Church, Its Unity in Diversity.” There are three candidates for the chair of Old Testament studies, in succession to Professor Cummihg—Rev. D. C. Herron, of St. David’s, Auckland; Rev. Dr. S. F. Hunter, of Melbourne ; and Rev. Alexander Moffatt, of Glasgow. The five candidates recommended for consideration for the Knox College mastership are Rev. W. B. Black, of Christchurch, Dr. John Ivirk, of Canton. Dr. E. N. Merrington, of Dunedin. Rev. E. J. Tipler, of Dunedin, and Professor J. W. Hinton, of tho University of Ceylon. On the subject of the Church’s attitude to war the public questions committee has agreed upon a statement from which it is believed that the controversial elements havo been withdrawn. In view of the results of the recent licensing poll it is anticipated that the temperance committee’s report, to be presented on Thursday evening, will be tho occasion for lively and outspoken criticism. Upward of 400 delegates are expected to visit Auckland to attend tiro sessions of assembly and the _ annual conference of the .Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, which will be held in St. Sepulchre’s Church buildings at the same time. The assembly s sessions are planned to conclude on Thursday of next week. THE NEXT MODERATOR. SEVERAL NOMINATIONS MADE. The following nominations are reported for moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly for 1929-30: Rev. Wm. Trotter, of Mornington, Dunedin, nominated by tho Presbyteries of Dunedin, and Oamaru; Rev. A. B. Todd, of Northland, Wellington, by the Presbyteries of Central Otago, Clutha, Westland and Ashburton; Rev. D. D. Scott, of Onehunga, by the Presbyteries of AVellinaton, Nelson and Taranaki: Rev. D. Mclvor. of Marton, bv the Presbytery of Wanganui: Hon. J. B. Gow, by the Presbytery of the Bay of Plenty; Rev. John Collie, of Queenstown; Otago, by the Presbyterv of Wairarapa; and Rev. Geo. Budd, superintendent of home missions, by the Presbytery of Auckland. Tho nominations will be considered at the morning session of assembly on Saturday, November 24.
