SCHOOL CHILDREN TAUGHT. A report submitted to the council of tlio New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association shows that tlio number of certificates issued to school children during the 1927-28 season for proficiency in swimming was a record, exceeding the previous season’s total by 2500. The figures for the past three seasops are: 1926, 1481; 1927, 10,458; 1928,' 12,958. The year’s total of 12,958 certificates comprised 3069 certificates of merit (2299 last season),, 3752 proficiency certificates (2971 last season), and 6137 learners’ certificates (5188 last season), distributed among 373 schools. The number of schools represented was a record, the previous best having been 276 last season. The year’s total of certificates brought the number of certificates issued since the inauguration of the scheme, to 74,623. For the third year in succession, Hawke’s I3ay headed the list, with 2066 certificates, "Wellington being second with 1632. Manawatu was seventh with 899, a big increase on last year. Otago had the greatest number of schools (59), this figure constituting a record for any one centre. The previous record was 58 schools supplied with certificates by Otago, in 1924. Details of the certificates issued in each centre are:—
No fewer than twenty-five schools qualified for the special certificate through more than 50 per cent, of the standard pupils qualifying for certificates.
