BOROUGH EMPLOYEES.
HOLIDAYS AND SALARIES. A COUNCILLOR’S PROTEST. As the outcome of a question recently raised at a meeting of the Borough Council concerning the granting of holidays to clerical employees, it was agreed at the meeting last night that, in future, the public office should be closed on Anniversary Day (January 22), picnic day (January), Good Friday to Easter Tuesday inclusive, Anzac Day (April 25), King’s Birthday (June 3), two half-days for tho Winter Show; two half-days for the Spring Show, Labour Day, and from December 25 to January 2, inclusive. . A short discussion again took place on the matter last night, when Cr. Milverton commented that, including annual leave, some members of the staff were apparently receiving holidays amounting to periods varying up to a total of six weeks in a year. They only wanted superannuation, he added, and they would be in Paradise. It was, he considered, not just to the ratepayers. , The same councillor rose to protest a few minutes later when the question of salaries was being reviewed, saying that he wanted his vote recorded against the proposals on principle. In 1925, lie alleged, local bodies wont partially insane, but the Utopia they thought they had reached was a myth. Salary increase were not warranted at present. Tho public had to pay. Cr. Hodgens said he agreed with Cr. Milverton to a certain extent. He did not know ifhe reason <or making the matter a retrospective one.
