TAXI-DRIVER’S LICENSE.
POWER OF LOCAL BODIES. HAMILTON, Nov. 19. A case of interest to taxi-drivers was before the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court, when a Tauranga taxi-driver, J. Wright (Mr Cooney) pleaded notguilty to a charge of plying for hire in Hamilton without a special license. Evidence was given that defendant, who was licensed to plv for hire at Tuuranga, accepted fares'ip Hamilton for driving passengers from Hamilton to Te Rapa on the occasion of the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa on October 20. Mr Cooney contended that the Motor Vehicles Act of 1927 amended the 1924 Act in 6uch a way that local bodies were limited in their power of licensing motor-taxis for hire to those taxis garaged in their own towns, and that consequently a taxi-driver who had a license to ply for hire taken out in his own town was entitled, under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act- to ply for hire in any other town. Mr A. Swarbrick, solicitor for +he Hamilton Borough Council, was instructed by the traffic inspector to argue the case, and it was agreed that arguments be submitted in writing to the magistrate. °
