RACING NEWS.
THE OTAKI FIXTURE. THE FIELDS REVIEWED. (By “Binocular.”) The spring meeting of the Otaki Maori Pacing Club opens to-morrow when there Will in all probability be a large attendance of racing enthusiasts from this district. Big fields promise to be the order of things throughout the day, and, although the public will have a certain amount of form from the Levin meeting to base their selections upon, there is quite a big percentage of introductions which might well throw matters astray. The card to be presented as is follows : IvAPITI HACK HURDLES, of 150 sovs.
One mile and a-half.
No less than 20 candidates figure in the hurdle race, but, as at Levin, Horomea figures as a double acceptor, and only the clay will disclose which event the topweight will prefer. The southerner Diana’s Lad has proved a very useful sort and should prove a serious conlendor, although the nature of the fences tends to improve the prospects of the less efficient jumper. Panorama and Star Shell both rajL good races at Levin, while Kilia was ffso observed finishing on well. Of the lightweights Sneerer and Red Bank read preferable, but probably Horomea (if started), Panorama and Star Shell will be accorded the strongest support on the day. A newcomer in | Novar will have some local friends. | PUHI MAIDEN PLATE, of 100 sovs. Special weights. Six furlongs. Abason Good Cheer Archeria Irish Moss Animated Kentish Lady Black Oden Kotahi Balloon Eka Kiriana Chief Singer Miss Field Cloyne Moutoa Fume Chopin Pompadour Cavity Ravine Callagain Star Girl Caluna Shot Silk Dancing Star Theresa Bell Fallow Wyeford Green Field Unless the unforeseen materialises, it would appear that the Pulii Maiden Plate will have to be run in divisions. Of the 34 acceptors, Thrift, a winner at Levin, is now ineligible, but the public will be set a task in selecting the winner. Those with the best qualifications to commend them are probablv Chopin, Dancing Star, Shot Silk and Star Girl, but there are several others of promiso whose form in public has not been so far disclosed. Probably Chopin, Dancing Star and Good Cheer will attract the closest attention. KATIHHCU HACK HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Seven furlongs.
Discourse, who ran in the Levin Cup on Saturday, is at the head of tile scale in the hack seven furlongs event, and while it is evident that the Gasbag mare is well, the turning course and big field may be against a slow beginner, while the diminutive Moutoa Treasury may be similarly affected, although the Paper Money filly has undoubted p&cc. Pale Star has Had plenty of racing, a position of affairs which does not apply to Maui and Royal Acre, although the latter should have improved sinco Waverley. Elysianor has been advanced to 7.12 as the result of his victory at Levin which brings him considerably closer to Green Acre. Of the 7.0 and over division, Airtight, Bissac and King Quex read possibilities and the day might find King Quex, Green Acre and Elysianor preferred to the heavior weighted Moutoa Treasury and Royal Acre. LING MEMORIAL STAKES, of 300 sovs.
One mile and a-quarter.
Vortigern, who is at the head of the table in tho Ling Memorial Stakes, has not done a great deal for some time past, but Black Mint has been out repeatedly and at tho C.J.C. meeting was giving evidence of feeling the effect. Paitoim did not start at Levin, but, presumably, the chestnut is all right. Should lie bo up to concert pitch, Paitonu might well make a bold bid for the honours. Blimp -will not fulfill his engagements, but of the next trio Royal Mint and Shining Armour will have to be considered, Talisker, the winner of the Levin Cup, has been advanced 101bs., but on his showing on Saturday such should not prevent him from again playing a prominent part. Of the lighter weighted candidates Avro, Kilperon and Imperial Spark arc possibilities and Talisker, Kilperon and Imperial Spark might be found in the firing line in the run to the judge’s box to-morrow.
PAHIICO HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Six furlongs.
Royal Duke, who essayed Stewards* honours at Christchurch, is on the same mark as Veronese, who won in attractive fashion at Levin, with Raineses, a winner at Wellington, on the same mark as Rotowhero, who ran second to the Sutala gelding on that earlier occasion at a disadvantage of 71bs. in the weights. Arrow Boy and Lady Quex are both smart over a short course, while Moutoa Wonder, Mark Mint and Baskier cannot bo discarded. Orcades has promised good things for a long time past, only to disappoint repeatedly, but she might yet make good and the Bisogne inaro, together with Rameses and Royal Duke, may dispute favouritism. WAITAWA HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. Six furlongs.
The open sprint event has drawn the smallest field for the day—l2 runners. Helotis foiled at Levin after having been prominent for a considerable distance and, although not a good weight carrier, the Lucllus. maro might well improve on that showing. Dobbin and Keddar will likewise have benefited by their outing, while Bonogne, who disappointed at Levin, may be promoted. However, on Saturday’s running Ridgemount appears to hold the strongest claims and the Leighton gelding, Helotis and Keddar might well figure prominently.
King Quex 8 4 Tangra was penalised 71b for his win at Levin and at a 31b advantage Kalos should prove capable of turning the tables. Homo Made has proved useful in hunters’ company, but might find Tcheka too speedy for him. Gasnapper and Otauru Lass are in
at tho minimum, but no doubt Kalos and Tcheka will be preferred to Gasnapper.
Royal Game, Bonogne, Horomea, Olympic, Tanagra, Kilmezzo and Twink, who figure in the concluding e«ent, also claim earlier engagements, but it may bo found that Royal Game, Horomea and Kilmezzo will prefer this event. Should they elect to do so, the trio may be found in tho prize money distribution, although Vigilance might prove difficult to disposo of. SOUTH CANTERBURY ACCEPTANCES. Per Press Association. TIMARU. BRILLIANT PRINCE HUMPHREY
MAY NOT RACE AGAIN.
AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. It is doubtful whether the brilliant New Zealand horse Prince Humphrey will ever race again. This news was brought to Auckland to-day by his owner, Mr C. G. Ma"cindoe ; who stated that as a result of injuries received during the running of the YUctonan Derby Prince Humphrey was now in the hands of a veterinary surgeon, at Melbourne. “Prince Humphrey was galloped on right at the beginning of the race for the Derby, and his near hind tendon was completely severed,” Mr Macindoe stated. Afterwards it appeared as if the tendon had been cut with a razor. Had Prince Humphrey not been injured Mr Macindoe is convinced that he would have won the race, defeating Strephon. . , “Prince Humphrey was in much better form than when he won the A.J.C. Derby,” he stated. “Jamieson had lrim in beautiful trim, and he was keenly disappointed when the horse was injured. I must say .that this regret was general. In spite of the injurv, which must have pained him dreadfully, Prince Humphrey ran a great race. The veterinary surgeon stated afterwards that he did not know how the horse kept up, and attributed it to his pluck.” The race for the A.J.C. Derby was run in faster time than the Victorian Derby, and this convinces Mr Macindoe as much as anything that Prince Humphrey would have beaten the field. He was also taking into consideration the fact that Prince Humphrey was in better form.Discussing the future of Ins horse, Mr Macindoe said it was in tire lap of the gods. He was anxiously awaiting word from Melbourne. In any case as soon as his horse was well enough fo travel he would be brought back to New Zealand. Mr Macindoe commented on his bad luck. He recalled also that his horse Ti Tree was injured on the ship when, travelling from New Zealand to Australia. Discussing racing in Australia generally, Mr Macindoe said ho considered the English-bred horse Gotlric the most brilliant performer in the Commonwealth to-day. As far as he could see there was no other horse to touch Gothic when in form.
