MR SMITH CONFIDENT

(Australian Press Association —United Service.) Received November 6, 10.45 a.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 5.

Mr A. E. Smith, tho Democratic nominee for the Presidency, feels “all right about the outcome of tho election on Tuesday, but he is not making predictions. , Two women .are included in tho 122 candidates to contest 37 Senate seats in 33 States. Four hundred and fifty members of the House of Representatives will be selected from 950 candidates ,including 18 women, while 124 candidates will contest 34 States for Governorships. * , A message from Chicago states that the Board of Election Commissions, in order to prevent ballot stuffing and other untoward incidents at the polls on Tuesday, is mobilising 15,000 official and volunteer watches to guard tho election.

FATAL DUEL,

(Australian Press Association.) NEW YORK, Nov. 4. A message from Jesup, Georgia, states that Judge R. Thomas, of the City Court, was shot dead by DeputySheriff Madray, following a knife and pistol duel in the streets. Both men were supporters of Mr H. Hoover the Republican nominee for the Presidency. Deputy Sheriff Madray, it is stated, took exception to Judge Thomas’s aspersions on his loyalty as a fit manager for the campaign on'behalf of Mr Hoover Judge Thomas, it is alleged, called him an “A 1 Smith man.” Deputy-Sheriff Madray was slashed, although his wounds are not serious. - The incident, indicates now. badly spiit the Democratic Party is in the Southern States, where hitherto Republican sentiment has never been known to exist.
