AMERICAN PRESIDENCY.

REPUBLICANS FRIGHTENED,

NEW YORK, Oct. 27. Indications that the Republicans have suddenly become frightened of the distinct'popular drift toward Mr A. L. Smith, the Democratic nominee, are seen to-day in two important political announcements. One is from Mr H. Hoover, tile Republican., nommee i to the effect that should the winter sessions of next Congress not pass farm relief legislation, he will, if elected, call a special session of Congress to deal with our most urgent economic problem. The other is from sources close to President Coolidge, to the effect that the President will probably issue a statement next week, appealing to the nation on behalf of Mr Hoover. Hitherto President Coolidge has refrained from campaign utterances. 18, his recently completed tours of the Middle West and New England, Mr Smith was accorded a triumphant reception. Observers of both parties agree that even Wilson and Roosevelt were never so acclaimed. The announcements is made furthermore that Senator Norris, who, with Senator Lafollette, led the Progressive movement in 1924, will definitely support Mr Smith. His possible securing of the vote of the agricultural northwest for the Governor of New York State has accentuated the pro-Smith aspects of the Presidential campaign at the present moment. Mr R. Lafollette, Junr. states that he will support neither Mr Smith nor Mr Hoover, but he finds Mr Smith’s water power and agricultural policy commendable.
