SHANNON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON, Sept. 4. Tho annual meeting of the Croquet Club was held in the pavilion on Thursday, when there was only a fair attendance. Airs Mason was in the chair, and in her presidential report stated that the past season Had been most successful, both socially and financially. Tho club last year had 19 playing members and 7 nonplayers, which must bo considered a very fine membership for a small country club. She went on to say: “Wo must regrot losing during tho soason two of tho pioneer members Mosdames Watterston and Mcliacldan, both of whom had worked very hard for the club, and had done much towards making croquet so successful in Shannon. Members of this description we can ill afford to loso. We have also lost two very keen players in Alesdames King and Hunt. Every’ opportunity was taken by members to improve their play and the coming season should see even greater improvement in that there will bo one almost full-sized green. Th,s enlarging of the green cost the club £ 15, but it was monoy well spent. Competitions during the season were keenly contested, and Mrs Harding holds tho premier place at the top of the ladder, a position which she well deserves, as she lost no opportunity in practice, and her example can well bo followed by all members. Airs Franks won tho “breaks” competition for senior players, and Mrs King for first year players. Mrs King also won the junior singles. The Nicholson Mallets were secured by Alesdaines Franks and Mason and held for three successive games. The trophies were then handed on in accordance with the rules, going to Alanakau. There was keen competition throughout tho season for tho club pins and challenge fees amounted to 225.” Tho treasurer then presented an excellent balance-sheet showing a credit of £6 2s sd, which was considered a splendid financial position to start the new season with. Tho following officors wero elected for the ensuing year; President, Mr 3 O. C. Franks, vice-president, Mrs J. T. Bovis; secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. S. Spencer; assistant secretary, Airs A. Alason; committee; Alesdames Koach, Braun, Snotling and Blaikie. It was decidod that the afternoon tea arrangements continue as boforo and that the subscription remain the same, while opening day should be, as usual, the same as the opening of the bowling green. A very successful social afternoon was given by tho members of tno Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild in tho church on Wednesday afternoon. There was a good attendance and brisk business was done at a plain and fancy goods stall. Two competitions, causing much 6tudy, wero hold and were won by Alesdames Sandison and Bovis and a sumptuous afternoon tea served by tho guild members was much enjoyed. His Worship tlie Mayor, Air E. Butt, has been compelled to enter a private hospital in Palmerston North for treatment. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery. Air J. Aim, who has beon indisposed for some time, is now making satisfactory progress.
