POSITION IN AUCKLAND.
SUGGESTED LIMITATION.
(By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 6. Tho ago of a costing officer, for which position applications are to be invited by tlie City Council, was mentioned by Miss Alice Baeten at tonight’s meeting. Miss Hasten suggested the conditions should stipulate that the age of applicants should be under 46 years “Why?” asked the Mayor, Mr Baildon. “He* would b© too old after 46, replied Miss Hasten amid laughter. She added that an older applicant would not bo able to give sufficiently valuable length of service as, in any case, the retiring age was 65. “Well, I am over 46,” observed tho Mayor reflectively. “In any case not many men .are qualified for such a position, and it would be a pity to turn down a good man because he was 47 or 48.” Miss Basten moved that the ago limit bo 46 years. “Any seconder?” asked the Mavor. . “Tho age of chivalry is not yet dead,” said Mr A. J. Stallwortliy. “I will second the amendment pro fofma.” The amendment was substantially defeated.
