THE MARTON FIXTURE.
COMMENT ON THE RUNNERS.
(By “Binocular.”)
Tho Marlon fixture is now past and Wanganui will bo tlio next to engage attention.
Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for all first day events at tho Wanganui fixture (including tho Wanganui Guineas) close to-night at eight o’clock.
Awapuni had a team of 18 horses engaged at tho Marton meeting and four successes came thoir way, G. Now presenting two in Pangolin and Blimp, J. llastio ono in Moutoa Treasury and L. Knapp one in the ’chaser Trouble. On recent performances Pangolin had distinct claims for consideration in the Spring Hack Cup, but the public installed Gold Curo a £2OO better favourite than tho local representative and tho prico tho Panmuro gelding returned was consequently a flattering one. At the Grand National mooting last month Pangolin had run a first, a second and a third in his threo starts, but even in tho face of those performances one hardly expected the chestnut to unfold tho finishing effort he did at Marton. He was standing up Lady’s Boy a considerable advantage at tho straight entrance, yet ho smothered his opponent over the last 60 yards.
Tho local sportsman, Mr C. T. Keeble, has not been fortunate enough to possess a real top class animal in recent years, although ho figures in tho list of Ashhurst Cup winnors, Pantler having brought off a surprise victory. Unfortunately, a trophy was not attached to tho stake on that occasion, and it was not till Wednesday that Pangolin’s victory brought him a sideboard trophy in the form of a silver cup. G. New has worked a marked improvement in Pangolin and time might well bring with it even better things for tho chestnut.
At tho To Matai point-to-point steeplechase, a Sir Frisco gelding who had been accorded the cognomon of Trouble did not altogether belie his name, for ho carried his owner-rider inside ono of the flags and tho margin of distanco ho accorded Terehu
thereafter mado his task an impossible ono. Better fortune attended tho gelding at tho Rangitikei point-to-point meeting where he duly won, then going on to run second at the Taranaki Hunt fixture last Saturday. Awapuni was very much in demand in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase on Wednesday, for of the first five fancies in tho betting tho local centre furnished throe. Scrap Iron, who had the services of A. McDonald, was installed first favourite, Terehu third elect and Troublo fifth. The backers of Scrap Iron had their hopes shattered early, whilo Terehu steadily faded out after a round' had been negotiated and it was left to Troublo to carry the centre through.
It was a case of an amateur horseman opposing a number of professionals and, while Mr Ken. Duncan had shown himself to bo a finished horsemen on earlier occasions, ho undoubtedly had a comfortablo rido which is more than can bo said for some of tho other horsemen. Trouble belied his name completely for he was running well within himself throughout, whilo lie nover put a foot wrong. The Huntervillo sportsman has another animal in Kilia undergoing tuition under L. Ivnapp at Awapuni and the Kilbroney gelding might well make good also. Racing over the bigger fencing is always attended with a large degree of uncertainty, and tho Hunt Cup Steeplechases at both Dannevirko and Marton were productive of many mishaps. Of tho 13 horses which contested the event on Wednesday, six of tho number were victims of misfortune. Del Sarto failed failed to survive tho initial fence, Scrap Iron and Mataipuko brought their activities to a close at the second fence —the brush double —Bonus at tho next, whilo The Don and Rod Spider • bade their backers good-bye further along the course. Scrap Iron had run a good race at Dannevirko when Handy provod to bo tho winner, and it was confidently expected that he would show improvement. However, backers were not favoured sufficiently to really determine tho prospects of their fancy for his running off at tho doublo brought his activities to a close. Another Awapuni candidate in Terehu ran disappointingly, it being very evident by tho manner in which lie faded out that he was far from himself.
Awapuni’s third victory came per medium of Moutoa Treasury in the Electric Hack Handicap. This compact daughter of Paper Monoy and Moutoa Ivanova, whilo perhaps a shade on the small side, has speed to burn, but it appeared that slid was being asked too much to concede Knightliko a start at tho straight entrance. However, she produced a great finishing effort and worried tho Paladin colt out of the big end of the stake money. Peculiarly enough, that very useful sort, Blimp, commenced his winning career on the Marton track on the occasion when the club officially opened its amended course, and Wednesday saw him signal his entry upon the season’s activities by capturing the Railway Handicap in great stylo. Sheer dash and doggedness over tho final pinch enabled the son of Gasbag and Marfaux to smother the opposition. Still better things should bo in store for him, although ho had a luxurious poundage on Wednesday.
Tho heavy nature of tho going told on tho maiden runners, and passing tho stewards’ stand they appeared to be almost “going up and down.” Dermod had appeared to bo beaten at that stage, but his rider drove him along and he' answered tho call to beat Marica by a neck. The latter had the services of R. J. Mackio on this occasion, and the daughter of Arrowsmith stayed on better than she had done at Dannevirko, although five furlongs promises to bo far enough for her in the meantime.
•Dermod is a fine typo colt, being by Limond out of Noreen, and the transfer to D. Prosser’s stable at Porirua appears to have done him good. Whilo tho Aucklander, Mauriaona, who ranked as the favourite, could not do better than finish in the bunch, the Lucullus filly might be found improving on that performance before she is taken home.
Tho Acre-Drought golding, Dry Area, who was purchased some little time back by a lady patron of G. New’s stable, mado his first appearance —a delayed one —on tho race track at Marton and the public supported him surprisingly well. As ho had the services of R. Reed, probably tho rider had something to do with it. Jumping out smartly, ho led to the entrance, but was there finished with. It was, however, a useful performance. Form was strikingly demonstrated in the Itata Hack Hurdles on Wednesday when Cohesion sprcadeagled ' his field. Tho son of Polydamon early assumed command and, jumping perfectly, was untroubled to win by ton lengths. At Dannevirko he had displayed form which had indicated that his turn would not be long, but presumably the public was of the opinion that tho nature of tho going and tho poundage would halt him. Once again Lieutenant Bill filled the third berth, a new recruit in Beaumont splitting first and third lionours. Tho Boniform gelding had figured in hurdle events on previous occasions without actually facing tho starter, and his connections nearly brought, off a coup at their first time of asking. Conditions had _ pointed to Olympic proving hard to disposo of in the Rata Hurdles, but the Polydamon gelding did not enter into his work very enthusiastically over the early portion of tho journey and he had a lot of leeway to mako up on the final round. He eventually filled fourth berth, but ho was 17 to 20 lengths behind the winner. Sir Moment was another big disappointment, whilo Kempsoy ran a shocking race.
That smart sort Lady’s Boy figured in contests on two occasions at Marton, but ho had to bo content with second at each start. The Some Boy 11. gelding has command of a good turn of speed and he was unfortunate to find two of G. Now s candidates in Pangolin and Blimp unfolding too strong a finishing effort for him.
One of tho best efforts in the Spring Hack Cup was produced by tho Autumn horse Singleton, for, after tho field had traversed two of its seven furlongs mission, ho was racing at tho rear _of the field. Over the concluding portion he, however, unfolded a great effort to get up into third plaoo. Gold Curo had every chance at the entrance, but failed to go on with it 7 whilo Holus 3301 us did not finish as well as expected. Kilmezzo was in tho picture right into tho straight and the Boniform golding should improvo on that showing before long. Ten, on the other hand, was well back at tho entrance, yet finished a fair fifth. Bisox was backed as unbeatable in 'lie Marton Handicap, but tho Bisogne mare did not unfold her customary _ finishing effort, although she did strugglo into third place, a couple of lengths behind tho winner. Bisox was disappointed at tho turn and’ her inability to get clear sufficiently early may have told against her. Incidentally, tho race book continues to show the dam of Bisox as Canary Creeper, whereas it is Cheshire Creeper. The dam was by Patronus out of ICenari Karopa, which is Maori for Canary Creeper. Several of tho candidates in the Marton Handicap were having their first outmgs for tho season, and the battle for leadership was waged practically throughout, positions changing frequently. Orazone was the early leader from Shining Armour, but entering the back Vivo took command from Polonott. At the half mile peg Captain Gazeley was in front, but Queen Arch was tho first to turn for home, being attended once again by Shining Armour, who had drifted about during the courso of tho race.
The first four placings in tho Railway Handicap were filled by the lower weighted division, Blimp (7.4), Lady’s Boy (7.74), Oration (7.7) and Saggitarius (7.0) being tho animals who figured, King Lu, not being able to do better than finish 6ixth. King Lu was the sole member of the topweight division to receive anything liko strong support, Kiosk, Star Stranger, Valkon and Dobbin being all long orders. Kiosk,- who looked well enough, had a midget rider, who must have had close on 5011)6. dead weight in his saddle bags.
Pale Star carried his record of recent successes further when he won the Tutaenui Hack Handicap—the concluding event
at Marton —in comfortable manner. Although there was some crowding at the turn going away from home, Palo Star running a shade wide after negotiating the actual corner, ho was always well enough placed and when asked the question experienced littlo difficulty in stalling off a challenge from ICilburn. It gave tho local horseman, It. J. Mackie, his second winning mount £or the day and tho nitn within a week;
