FEILDING NEWS.

HOCKEY ASSOCIATION. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Sopt. 5. Mr O. Sporlc presided over the regular fortnightly mooting of the Feilding Hockey Association executive first night, there being also present Messrs Barltrop, Hobday, McLeod, Shelton and Chesterfield. Apologies for absence were received from Mies Worsfold and Mr Marshall.

The Wairarapa Association wrote accepting September 15th as tho date for the visit of the Feilding teams, but owing to tho uncertainty of securing the services of certain country players the executive decided to hold over confirmation of the date until later in the week. A letter was received from tho Taranaki Ladies' Hockey Association that the visiting team would arrive in Feilding on Thursday and leave on Friday. The president announced that ample arrangements had been made for the billeting of the visitors and also for the holding of a social evening after the match. Tho New Zealand Hockey Association wrote upholding a ruling given by the chairman of tho Feilding Hockey Association at a recent meeting of delegates. In connection with a letter received from Mr A. R. McKenzie, the secretary reported that he had sent a full reply on the question raised. The Feilding High School Old Girls’ Club forwarded notification that it could not field a team on Saturday next. — Received. The Carnarvon men’s club wrote advising that it had decided not to take any interest in hockey in Feilding until the present state of affairs was cleared up satisfactorily.—Received. GENERAL. Reporting on tho arrangements for the McKelvio Cup match, Mr Hobday said that very little satisfaction could bo obtained from Oroua sub-Association, but it was understood that September 19th had been fixed as the tentativo date. Tho secretary reported that tho association was in a healthy financial position, having a credit of £46 18s sd. It was decided to take no action in the meantimo in connection with a hockey supportor who wa3 alleged to have interfered with the players who had been selected to play in a recent match. OVERSTAYED VISIT. For having exceeded tho length of tho period for which he was permitted to stay in New Zealand, a Chinese subject answering to the name of Leo Ling, alias Leo Chong, appeared before Mr A. J. Geary, J.P., at the Police Court yesterday. The police stated that accused had been given a permit at Auckland on December 7th last to remain in New Zealand for six months and had failed to apply for an extension of his permit. On tho application of tho prosecution, accused was remanded to appear at Auckland. MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL. Tho monthly meeting of tho Manchester Street School Committee was held last night, Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick presiding. Others present were Mrs Fitzpatrick, Messrs Andrews, Desmond. MeDowall, Goldsmith and Campbell (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Billman and Mr Hosking. Before commencing the usual business of the meeting the chairman referred to tho death of Mrs H. Mclntyre, and on his motion a vote of sympathy was accorded Mr Mclntyre, all present standing in silence. The headmaster (Mr R. L. Mcllroy) reported as follows:—Tho attendance for the two weeks before the holidays showed an average of 403.2, being 83 per cent, ot the roll, the falling away being duo to colds and influenza. Dr. Gunn visited the school on August 9th to examine the classes. A successful concert was hold in the school on Auugst lGth, the net proceeds being £l7 Is 2d. Seven pupils won prizes in the British and Colonial Industries writing competition for 1927, tho results of which came to hand last week. Miss E. M. Wilson took up hor duties as additional assistant teacher on Tuesday.—The report was adopted. In reply to the committee’s letter pointing out the necessity of having tho roof of the school painted, the Education Board wrote stating that the matter would be given attention after the work at Lytton Street School was completed. The secretary advised the committee that the board’s donation of £lO for work done last September had arrived arid that the gramophone and records for tho school would be available in due course.

A copy of the representations made by tho president of the Teachers’ Institute for the establishing; of smaller classes was put before the committee and the secretary was instructed to thank the president for his endeavours. It was decided to approach the Borough Council with a view to haying the word “school” painted on the bitumen roadway running past the school. , , A voto of thanks was accorded the teachers for bringing the recent concert to such a successful conclusion.
