SHANNON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON, Sept. 5.

Tho ordinary mooting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: Crs. Thwaites, Hyde, Downes, Curran jnr., and Curran senr. Apology for absence was received from tho Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Cr. Hook. Cr. Thwaites, in the absence of tho Mayor, occupied tho chair. A motion of deepest sympathy was passed to Cr. Hook in the loss of his wife, all present standing as a mark of respect to the deceased lady. The Palmerston North Borough Council wrote stating that tho deputation representing tho contributing bodie<s to the hospitals would wait upon the Primo Miniseter and tho Minister of Health at Wellington on tho 13th inst. —It was resolved that tho town clerk represent the council on the deputation. A lottcr was received from tho Palmerston North Hospital Board stating that it proposes to purchase an additional property as an extension to its farm at Awapuni at a cost of £ISOO, and asking for the council’s opinion, pointing out that tho local bodies have to find half the money for such a proposal.—liesolved that tho scheme as outlined by the board be approved. . A firm of garage proprietors wrote with reference to tho council’s interview regarding insuring their petrol pumps against third party claims arising cut of accidents which may occur through their installation on the kerbside. Admitting that tho council was right in enforcing this regulation, the letter pointed out tho additional overhead expense incurred to the firm, and requested the council to earnestly consider a reduction of the annual license feo on each pump from £3 to 10s. It was stated that tho pump system had been adopted at considerable expense to improve the service to tho public moro for its benefit than for the firm’s own. Since the installation «f tho pumps the firm had erected a freo air and water plant, met tho council in greatly improving the pavement in front of the whole of the property, and by giving such service had lessened tho risk of accident to pedestrians by eliminating much of tho motor traffic formerly directed across the pavement. Ihe system had assisted the progress of the town and had not detracted from its be’auty.—After consideration it was resolved to leave tho matter over until after 31st March next. Tho borough foreman reported that 94 yards of metal had been carted to Ballanco, Margaret, Bryce and East Streets, tho grader being at work on the main roads. Now decking had been put on tho bridge at south end of Plimmer Terrace and repairs had been carried out to the Nathan Terrace and Thompson Street bridges. The footpaths, in Venn Street and Ballancc Streets had been levelled and ready for metalling. The pipe line and water galleries received the usual inspection. Spoaking to tho report, Cr. Hyde stated that the roads of the borough were in a shocking stato, and bo ivas of tho opinion that tho council’s method in dealing with tho roads was. behind the times. The grader was not used enough. On his motion, it was resolved to discuss road maintenance at next council meeting.
