GLEN OROUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN OROUA, Sept. 4. The last of the series of fortnightly euchre parties and dances was hold in the Glen Oroua Hall on Friday night last. As usual, the attendance was good, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Mrs E. Boyce was successful in winning the ladies’ prize and Mr Stevenson the gentlemen’s. Consolation prizes wore awarded to Mrs Webb and Mr Fortune (Paraparaumu). The points prizes for the season were won by Mrß Sullivan and Mr P. Farland. A fancy dress danco was to have been held on September 14th, but it has now been decided to hold instead an ordinary dance on the same date. A full orcehstra has been engaged and there will be the usual supper provided. For non-dancers progressive euchre will be played. Miss Bennett’s (Palmerston North) party will present a play in the hall on September 25th. The first portion of the programme will consist of an Indian play and the second part of a mu6icni comedy. Considerable interest is being taken at Rongotea on Monday, September 10th, locally in a boxing tournament to bo hold when novices from Glen Oroua, Taikorea and Rongotea will bo matched against pupi's of Nelson McKnight’s and of the Awapuni Boxing School. The tournament is to be held under auspices of the Manawatu Boxing Association, Mr G. Watchorn, the former Australian and Now Zealand amateur champion, kindly consenting to act as referee. A suitably inscribed medal is to bo presented to the winner of each bout of which there are ten, and a special medal has been given by Mr A. Burgess for the local boy putting up tho best showing. The whole tournament is strictly amateur, no meinbor of the Rongotoa club receiving expenses of any kind, the instructor, Mr L. Poupard, also acting purely in the interests of amateur boxing. On their initial effort the members of tho club are to bo congratulated upon thoir praiseworthy attempt to put boxing on such a firm footing in Rongotea, the club having been in existence for only about two months. Upon enquiring of the instructor as to tho capabilities of the pupils, your correspondent was inforrnod that for Bueh a short period of instruction many j of the pupils showed considerable promise, and if matched against novices should make quite a good showing. In connection with tho Rongotea Women’s Institute, of which several local ladies aro . members, Miss Sponcor, tho organising secretary of tho Women’s Institute, will address a meeting on institute matters at tho Masonic Ilall, Rongotea, on Wednesday. On Thursday, September 6th., a demonstration in cooking with an electric stove will be given by Mrs Barrington, a power board representative from Wellington. through injuries received in a match some time ago, and is now well on the road to recovory. Tho Taikorea euchre parties were brought to a close for the season, last Friday night, tho points prizes being won by Miss Violet Sexton, and Mr M. Hehir. A concert in aid of the Taikorea Hall funds is to be held shortly. The Glen Oroua School opened this morning after the term holidays. The and girls’ sevon-asido hockey teams will bo taking part in the primary schools’ hockey tournament to bo held at Foilding on Saturday next. The girls’ team will have to defend thoir rights to the Carthew Rose Bowl, which they have held for the past two years. Next week an oloven asido match will he played by tho girls against Rongotea School in the first round for the Thomson Hockey Shield. The school committee have in hand arrangements for Arbor Day which is to bo held shortly.
