MANAWATU COUNTY.
HIGHWAY SUBSIDIES. CONSTRUCTION WORIC AUTHORISED. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Aug. 25. For the purpose of fin in connection with tlie Mail Highways Board’s subsidy to bo paid on necessary work on certain highways m the Manawatu County, the chairman, Or. Barber, and the county clerk, Mr Drew, proceeded to - Wellington this week and waited on Mr F. W. lurkert, engineer-in-chief to the Public Works. Department and chairman of the Highways Board. This morning a “Standard’’ reporter was informed by Mr Barber of the result of the interview.
“For the construction and penetration work on the Sanson-Awahuri Road we have been granted a £3 to £1 subsidy and in regard to the work on the roadfrom Sanson to the top of Mt. Stewart we have authority to commence it as soon as possible,”, stated Mr Barber. “A similar subsidy lias also been granted in the case of the Himatangi-Rangiotu highway, and this grant has also been made applicable to work on tho road of such nature as straightening the bends in the vicinity of the Bainesse railway station. This work alscf can be gone on with as soon as possible.” A subsidy of only £2 to £1 had been granted in tlie case of the FoxtonHimatangi main highway, Mr Barber explained, as this road was out of the radius of the petrol tax funds, but money would be made available on this basis for work on this road.- to be carried out during the year. The plans foi£ the proposed work on Pyke’s Road Rangiotu, had been approved, stated the chairman, and the necessary authority given for the work to be gone on with immediately.
