MANAWATU SPRING MEETING

SOME EXCELLENT SPORT,

Excellent sport was provided at the Manawatu Whippet Racing Club’s spring meeting yesterday afternoon. The track at the Sportsground had dried rapidly after the recent rain, but was just a little holding. There was also a breeze against the dogs so that the times recorded were very fast. . The handicapping was good and close finishes were the order of the ■day. The longer races proved of more interest to the crowd than did the shorter ones of previous meetings. Bonny Doon 1 Giggles 2 Domino 5 Bonny Doon, Giggles and Domino got he best of the start and drew away from the field with about a length between each of them. With 20 yards to go Giggles threw out a challenge, but Bonny Doon managed to get home by half a length. Domino was two lengths behind the second dog. Time, 8 2-ssecs. LINTON HURDLES—I6S Yards. Houseman’s Bobette, 18yds. Time, 13 2-5 sees. * Final. Cayenne 1 Lady Jane 2 Nancy 3 Cayenne soon overhauled Tea Bell and at the second flight was lying •Jyrd. Lady Jane tipped this hurdle but recovered and drew away from Nancy. Fencing beautifully, Cayenne came up to second place and over the last flight was on terms with Lady Jane. He was not troubled to win from Lady Jane by two lengths with Nancy a length further back. Time, 13secs FITZHERBERT HANDICAP—I6S yards. First Heat.

From a great start the limit dogs, Kiltie, Boimio Doon and Lady Jane, maintained their _ advantage for 100 yards at which point Hot Stuff moved up. Lady Jane and Kiltie died away and Gold Dust and A 7 erawyne went up to the leaders. In a clinking finish Hot Stuff was superior, winning by a length and a half from Bonnie Doon, who held a half-length advantage over Gold Dust. Time, 10 2-ssecs., KAIRANGA HURDLES—I6S yards. First Heat. Air D. Christie’s Nancy, 25yds ... 1 Air L. Giorgi’s Lady Jane, 25yds ... 2 Also started. —Air C. Aitchison’s Tea Bell, 14yds.; Mr V. Goldfinch’s Lynx, 16yds.; Air C. Aitchison’s Gold Dust, 19yds. Time 13secs. Air C. Aitehison had hard luck in this race. Tea Bell, jumping in great stvle, had rapidly overhauled the field. At the last flight he took off somewhat far back and landed level with Nancy but fell. He finished fourth.

Alt's E. O. Johansen’s Nanette, scr. 1 Air AA’. Shirriffs Cayenne, scr ... 2 Also staiced. —Mr F. A. Cousins’ Dinah, 10yds. Time. 13secs. Final. Nanette 1 1 Cayenne 2 Nanette drew away from Cayenne a little from the start and the pair set off after Lady Jane and Nancy. At the third flight Nanette was in front and was never headed thereafter, winning by two lengths. Lady Jane stopped over the run in and Cayenne finished fast to snatch second honours by half a length. Nancy did not finish. Time, 12 3-osecs.
