JUNIOR RUGBY

WANGANUI v. MANAWHENUA

A FREE SCORING GAME

For ifhe first occasion since the amalgamation of tiro Manawatu and Horowhenua Unions, the junior representatives of Manawhenua were seen in action at the Showgrounds yesterday when Wanganui were the visitors. The local representatives suffered defoat by a margin of two points after a free scoring game,-bti* on the run of the play victory might well have been theirs, the half and fullback being particularly weak and costing the home side points. Conditions were very favourable for football and the handful of spectators weno rewarded with some interesting incidents, although the standard sadly' slumped on occasions.

THE OPPOSING SIDES

Both sides underwent alteration, the fifteens which took the field being as under: — < Wanganui (blue). —Holland, Harrison, Koroneko, Gallagher, Rees, Crotty, Grenside, Glasgow, Rhodes, Tonks, Yates, Herd, Fowler, Woon. Manawhenua (colours). —Pou, Smith, Bengo, Thompson, Pago_, Rose, Hartley, Hepburn, McKenzie, Trotter, Taylor, vertongen, Johnson, Flowers, Farrell.

Manawhenua were required to face the breeze at commencement and following a period of exchange kicking, tho visitors found touch inside home territory and, working them to subwhonua line, compelled them to submit to a force. With play 7 at midfield Rose accepted a mark and failure to field his high kick by a blue back enabled the homesters to work to the attack. Hartley opened up to his backs from a loose scrum and, although Benge appeared to knock on, Ire recovered possession in an ensuing scramble to go over wide out. Taking the kick himself, he failed. Manawhenua .3—o. Stimulated by their success Manawhenua returned to the attack, but faulty handling halted their progress and two breaches for offsido enabled Wanganui to work beyond the centre line, a long liner by Rose driving them back. A kick through and fast fol-low-up by Gallagher compelled Smith to hurriedly kick Woon taking a mark in good position, but liis shot passed outside. _ A cross kick to Smith saw tho local winger set sail for the corner, only 7 to have one foot forced into touch by Rusden, although he went over the goal line. I roni the throw in, Hartley opened up and Page cutting in nicely 7, lie handed on to Benge, for the centre to add Ins second try 7. Rose’s kick failed to find the uprights. —Manawhenua 6—o. Immediately following upon the kick out Wanganui wont to the attack and, Pago coming in to save, was penalised for holding on, but Rusden failed with a simple shot. A break away by Trotter saw him left with hut Rusden to beat, but a low pass to Rose went unaccepted. A kick through caught Pou awkwardly placed aud a series ot mills just short of the home line, ensued until a forward cleared. A high kick through hv Rose was followed fast by Page, who caught Rusden in possession, but Harrison got back to save, play returning to neutral territory. Two ambitious shots at goal by Rees kept the visitors oil the attack, although the kicker could not lind the uprights. They, however, gained their reward when, from a high kick by Rees, Pou fumbled. He recovered only to put in a feeble kick which passed into tho arms of Fowler, who went over for a simple try in good position. Rusden goaled and the homesters’ advantage was reduced to a hare point.—Wanganui 5 —6. Tlio visiting forwards were now outplaying Manawhenua and from one sharp assault Rees was awarded a try, hut whether the hall reached ,terra firma or not appeared doubtful. Rusden .again made no mistake. —Wanganui 10 —6. Stung by the reverse Manawhenua woke up and Rose followed through on a ground kick to pick up and score in good position. Taking the kick himself, he goaled.—Manawhenua 11—10. Just prior to tho interval a luck across field bv Rose enabled Page and Benge to tachle Rusden in possession and, from an ensuing melee, Mclvenzio emerged in possession to throw himself over the chalk line. Benge failed and the interval was sounded with the scores reading;

Manawhenua 14, Wanganui 10

For quite a period following resumption, Manawhenua carried all the attack, over hard kicking spoiling two promising opportunities, whilo holding on too long saw Page grassed in possession. Feeble play by Pou, however, lost the advantage in a flash and from a melee right on the line Rees was granted a score. Rusden kicked a poster. —Wanganui 13, Manawhenua

An immediate.reply was forthcoming, for a forward rush by Manawhenua swept right dowir-into the corner where McKenzie went over in possession. Pou fniled -with the shot.—Manawhenua 17, Wanganui 13. Wanganui seriously tested the defence immediately following, Smith getting back to save a touch down when Pou was beaten by Woon, but the custodian made amends to some extent by lining out with a great kick later. Loose play inside the home twenty-five was brought to a closo when Crotty handed on to Yates and the forward burst clean through to score a good try which Rusden, however, failed to improve upon.—Wanganui 16, Manawhenua- 17. Play was fast becoming scrappy, Yates, a visiting forward being, however, a very active figure, standing head and shoulders above the others, and, although ' lie was foiled twice lie was finally awarded a somewhat doubtful try after Pou had fallen on the leather. Rusden found the range too great.—Wanganui 19, Manawhenua 17. , : The final whistle found the honours resting with the visitors by a margin of two points—a somewhat flattering outcome in view of the run of the play. Air H. AlcGregor, who refereed, employed the whistle as little as possible, but he overlooked many bad breaches for pushing and tripping.

The attendance was between 4000 and 5000. The Wellington forwards, ltd by Pouter and Sly, with ' Coulston, Blacker and Shearer well up, commenced the attack, but determined resistance sent them back. Returning after a short spell, Ramson, for illegal tactics in the scrum, had a shot at goal ten yards inside the half way lino, but the ball passed just outsido the posts. Within a few minutes Q. Donald was caught offside in front of the goal and Ramson had another try. at goal, this tinio from a yard, inside

Wairarapa returned to the attack and Halt oneiicd up two promising efforts, hut the defence was too solid and both stopped short of the objective. Handling in the scrum gave Porter a chance to relieve and lie lined near the 25 flag. Another Wairarapa rush looked very dangerous till Cummings took a timely mark and relieved. With play in the centre of the field, Coinan gave a clever dummy and ran down the line, passing to MaclCay. Tlio latter ran brilliantly till Yates upset him. Shortly after Porter was illegally tackled by Q. Donald midway between half way and the 25 slightly to tlio sido. Ramson made a good effort, hut missed. Wairarapa 6 Wellington 3 No further score occurred before half time.

In the second spoil Wairarapa held tho ascendancy nearly all though except for sudden forays which were very dangerous while they lasted. There was spectacular play on both sides, especially by tlio Wellington forwards. Had the latter been harked up, the result might have been different though it is difficult to say as tho tackling all round was very deadly and .solid. Wellington accepted four forces and Wairarapa one. In the latter McKenzie secured a high one from Cooke, ran in a dazzling manner and transferred to Petersen who got two yards from the lino hut lost the ball. The forwards carried on a hot melee which ended in McGregor forcing just in time. Well on in the game Stringfellow sent a high one to Cummings, he and Hart arriving as the ball reached Cummings’ arms. He passed wildly to Mac Kay who was tackled by Hart as lie kicked and Stringfellow charged down tho hall which wen* out near Wellington’s corner. Then Coman relieved with a good line kick, but Wairarapa returned. Cooke essayed a cut in to goal, hilt was grounded. Chaney shot the hall hack to Sharpe who punted into tho gap. Stringfellow gathered up and passed to Cooke and the latter to Yates who was floored at the corner by Peterson, Porter sending the hall into touch. Sharpe and Cooke were again associated in an effort *o pierce, tlio latter being tackled, but getting up and carrying on. He was tackled again and lost the hall as lie fell, Q. Donald diving through tho ruck to score,. Yates, taking tho kick, missed, but was awarded another attempt on account of charging too soon. Ho again missed.
