LAWN TENNIS.

(Australian Press Association.) MONTREAL, Aug. 20.

A message from Newport, Rhode Island, states that, displaying a creditable brand of tennis, J. Crawford advanced to the third round in the twelfth annual invitation tournament here by beating Hobbs 6—o, 6—l, and Burnell 6—4, 6—4. Moon defaulted to Dericou; Cummings defaulted to Weld. Hopman arrived late, and was advanced to the third round in which he beat Dane, 7—5, 6—l. Paterson, it is understood, is not coming.

To-morrow Crawford meets Lott, the defeat of whom would be much in his favour. Critics stated that he appeared in excellent form.

A PRACTICE SET,

(Australian Press Association.) NEW YORK, Aug. 20.

At Forest Hills Miss Helen Wills beat J. B. Hawkes in a practice set, 6—3.
