CROCODILE AND SKINK
(By Telegraph. —Special to Standard). AUCKLAND, Aug. 21. A baby crocodile and a skink, a member of the lizard family, which wero brought to Auckland by tlle Melanesian mission steamer Southern Cross this week, have found a new ana somewhat uncongenial home at the too. , . c The exhibits arrived in tho care ol Rev. A. A. Thomson, and an expression of thanks for the gifts has been conveyed to him by the City Council. Both the now arrivals are at present housed in warm boxes as, in view of tho climatic conditions, it is not deemed expedient yet to give them full liberty. It is expected that they will need careful attention until warmer days arrive. Alligators have previously been on exhibition at the zoo, but they failed to survive the more rigorous climate of their new environment, and it remains to bo seen whether the crocodile, the first of its kind placed in the zoo, will prove more hardy. At present it is less than three feet long. There are already several skinks of the Australian variety at the zoo. hut the latest addition is from the Solomon Islands and differs somewhat in colour from its older established relatives.
