THE COOKS' STRIKE.
ALLEGED INTIMIDATION. SEAMEN’S SECRETARY CHARGED. SYDNEY, Aug. 14. The hearing was commenced, and adjourned of four charges against Jacob Johnson, general secretary of the Seamen’s Union. The charges’ are a sequel of the recent marine cooks’ strike. Johnson is charged with hindering inter-State commerce and attempting to induce men to leave their employment by means of intimidation. These were firemen who arrived in Sydney in a ship manned by a crew who had agreed to do without cooks. Johnson, the prosecution alleged, bocame vituperative and told the men that if they did riot leave the ship, bags of ashes could conveniently fall from the hoists.
