OPEN SEASON WANTED.
PARADISE DUCKS AND SEALS,
(By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. Mr J. R. Hamilton (Awarua) speaking in the House of Representatives tins afternoon during the Budget debate, spoke in favour of an open season for paradise duck shooting, even if it were only for three days. That would have the effect of driving the ducks into the high country where they could get protection. It might he all right to protect them in certain districts, but in other districts it was different, and they were being poisoned out by people who were deprived of the right of shooting them. People with local knowledge should be taken into consideration.
Mr Hamilton also appealed for an open season for killing seals. At present he would undertake, if he received protection, to provide a sufficient number of skins to make seal coats for the wives of all tho members of Parliament. (Laughter.) Seals were now being killed, and it would bo just as well to allow them to bo killed legitimately and have the skins sold in the ordinary way.
