CHATHAM CUP

DISTRICT FINAL.

PETONE BEAT HASTINGS UNITED. At North Street Park on Saturday Petono met Hastings United in tho district final of tho Chatham Cup. Tho former team won a closely contested game by throe goals to 0110 and thus enters tho North Island final of the series. What would have been a sparkling display of the code was marred by a strong westerly wind which rendered accurate play practically impossible. Petone held the upper hand practically throughout and, playing with the wind against them in the first spell, broke even with their opponents. In the second half they dominated the gamo, adding two more goals. Had there boon no wind their winning margin would probably have beon greator as they showed more tactical knowledge and more exactitude than did Hastings United. Hastings United, though _ beaten, wore far frqm disgraced, fighting back gamely. Even after tho interval with the wind against them they made some spirited breakaways which caused the Potone supporters some anxiety. As was to be expected under the circumstances, the defence of both elevens was on a higher plane than their attack.

The teams took tho field as under: — Petone (blue and white). —McVean; Steel, Haynes; Farquhar, Campbell, Stobbs; McKenzie, Irvine, Leslie, Cleverley, Janies. Hastings United (yollow and black). —Wilson: Bell, W. Penman: Conroy, Booth, Butcher: Stenson, Clark, I). Penman, Farnell, H. Penman. With the full force of the gale behind them, United swung to the attack from the kick-off but could not penetrate the defence. Petone rallied, but could not hold the yellows, who swarmed back for D. Penman to send a rattling shot goalwards. McVean saved, and again the blacks rallied, coming upfield for Cleverley to essay a long shot against the wind, but the ball dropped just over the bar. Not to be denied the blue forwards returned and weak kicking on the part of the yellow defence nearly let them in, but Leslie missed. Hastings retaliated and assumed the offensive till the Petone forwards combined nicely. The movement was well halted by Bell. Up and down play ensued and thon H. Penman nearly put Hastings ahead, the wind carrying his shot wide. D. Penman was next in tho limelight, but he could not quite get on to the ball, and the leather wont behind. Irvine tricked the Hastings defence, but Bell was handy to clear, tho ball going to Campbell, who tried a hard shot which narrowly missed its objective. McKenzie and Irvine took the ball through and Irvine back-heeled, but McKenzie was not prepared for his pass and Bell cleared. Stenson put a nice shot down the centre, but Steel transferred the leather out of harm’s way. It was Petone’s turn, Campbell passing along the ground to Leslie, but Bell again proved safe. James had another try and then tho yellows returned. D. Penman got to the ball and left McVean no chance. Hastings United 1. Petone 0. From a throw-in soon after the resumption D. Penman swung the ball to Clark who shot from well out. McVean just touched the leather and tho wind carried it over the bar. . From the corner Petone put on full sail. McKenzie wormed his way through the defence and capped the movement with a great shot. Petone 1, Hastings United 1.

Hastings went to the attack again, but the defence was sound. McKenzie streaked up the line to put the blues on the attack and came right through to the goal mouth. Bell cleared well. A foul against Petone gave United their chanoe, but the ball went too far and their opponents returned. Farquhar drew the defence and let McKenzie have the ball. The winger took the ball in to the centre, but dallied too long and Bell cleared. Another blue raid nearly proved dangerous when Bell miskicked, but McKenzie’s shot cleared tho bar. United took a spell on the attack, but D. Penman’s shot was wide. Again Petone ralliod, but McKenzie lost a golden opportunity through overdoing a tricky bit of work. Wilson in goal was tested, but ho proved safe and the venue of play changed again, the blues conceding a corner. Half-time came with no alteration to the scores.

Petone 1, Hastings United 1 SECOND SPELL.

After the change-over Petone went away, but the wind carried the ball over the goal line. _ A free kiek saw Campbell come within an ace of finding tho net, but W. Penman saved, i Boon afterwards United were forced to concede a corner. No goal resulted and the yellows worked clear. Stenson went away up the side-line, but Haynes with a powerful kick sent Petone back to the attack again. Campbell sent the ball into the goal-mouth and James charged Wilson who managed to clear. He was, however, injured and Leslie was left with an open goal. Petone 2, Hstings United 1.

SDurred by this reverse, the yellows

stormed back, but Steel cleared. Cleverloy made a nice opening, but McKenzie slipped and play returned to midfield. Hastings moved forward only to find the blue defence too sound. Farquhar let McKenzie have tho ball and the wingei crossed nicely. Wilson saved well and also again later when Cleverley tried a shot. Hard luck was Petone’s lot a little later, Cleverley getting in the way of a shot. Irvine sent a high corner shot goalwards, but Wilson tipped it round the edge of the net. James crossed to Cleverley, but Booth got to the ball first to relieve a somewhat dangerous position. McKenzie centred from the other wing and Leslie sent in a piledriver which went inches wide. Wilson saved magnificently, and Bell worried Leslie off his shot for United to come upfield. D. Penman, however, put tho ball behind and the blues came back to be conceded several corners. The ball went behind and from the goalkick Hastings broke away to traverse the length of the field, but D. Penman could not steady himself for his shot. Another spirited yellow raid came to a similar termination and Petone resumed the offensive, but Wilson was safe. Cleverley was given an opportunity, but W. Penman was on to him and cleared. Leslie lobbed the ball across to McKenzie, who missed a “moral,” kicking right across tho goal-mouth. After another spell of bluo domination, McKenzie got the ball again, but his shot was a foot too high. United rallied, only for Pfctone to return to the attack. D. Penman and Stenson broke away, but the latter’s failure to accept a pass cleanly halted the movement. The yellows’ reign was short and back came Petone to bombard United’s citadel with shots, tho wind carrying them all wide. At last their efforts wore rewarded, Farquhar threading the defence to give the ball to Leslie. The centre, who was in a handy position, duly netted his second goal. Petone 3, Hastings United 1.

Spurred by this reverse, United attacked tooth and nail, but Stenson’s shot was lacking in direction. After a blue raid Hastings returned, but Steel cleared woll for Potone to regain the ascendancy. The final whistle sounded with no alteration to the score. Petono 3, Hastings Unitd 1. Mr H. Johnston controlled the game. PRIMARY REPRESENTATIVES.
