HOCKEY NOTES
(By “Half-back.”) The Bush Union, whose representatives will be well remembered by those who witnessed the New Zealand tournament here last year, arc again sending an eleven to the Dominion tourney. Bush were placed last in the tourney of 12 months ago and their sporting spirit in going south this year should earn them commendation. A somewhat unusual incident occurred during the Y.M.C.A. v. Karon match in Wellington last week, when the final goal was scored by P. Spiers, left full-back for Karori. It is not oiten that a full-back has the opportunity of netting. In the same match one of the Y.M.C.A. players accidentally shot the ball into his own goal. The date of the Manawatu men s match against Wellington has not'yet been settled, as Wellington are still arranging their game against Auckland. and until that date has been fixed it is impossible to finalise arrangements for the Manawatu contest, j Miss H. Hall was in good form last i Saturday. She was always on the ball 'and centred at the right time. Miss Jones also showed a remarkable re- ' coverv after being a bit off her game. She was always prominent in the forwards. and in the second half especially gave inspiration to her team.. These two players between them notched West End’s goals. Miss Jones taking the odd one. in five. Technical put up a fair resistance, but the West End forwards were in scoring mood and won by five goals to nil. Tokomaru, who lost to Oroua Downs by three goals to nil, made their mistake in not getting rid of the ball soon enough. Time and again, when ; suitable openings occurred, the red and I blacks spoilt their chances by not feedI ing the ball to the player in tire best 'scoring position. Not only did they lose opportunities by keeping the ball too long, but frequently they got beaten for possession and a favourable position was reversed against them. Pass the ball out, Tokomaru, and you’ll notice the improvement in your play. Bongotea’s display against Bunnythorpe, for a team with players' of the ability possessed by the purples, was disappointing. Usually a very even contest may be looked forward to when those teams meet, but on Saturday last Bunnythorpe had a marked superiority, scoring five goals' while llongotea were unable to open their account. The only explanation is that Bunnythorpe were in form, and ROll- - were not. It was certainly an experiment to take Miss F. Smith from the forwards, where she has been doing good work as right wing, and place her in the net. Her speed and hitting power were given ample scope in the forward line, and it yet remains to be seen whether the drastic change was justified.
