SOIL PROBLEMS.
REPORT BY RESEARCH COMMITTEE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 31. The first quarterly report of the research committee of the Couficil of Scientific and Industrial Research dealing with the problem of tho mineral content of pastures has been issued, dealing with the work in tho North Island and by the Cawtliron Institute. The areas being investigated aro some 100.000 acres of bush sick lands in the Rotorua and surrounding districts, a million acres towards -Tanmnrunm and also the greater part of the Wait-omo county. “Evidence is accumulating,” says the report, “that tho whole trouble with pumice soils is the excessive drainage from tho soils. The most rational method of improving tho water retaining power of the soil would bo to increase tho humus by green manuring, i.e., ploughing in green crops.”
