TORRENTIAL RAIN.
DAMAGE IN THE NORTH. ROADS UNDER WATER, (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard). AUCKLAND, July 23. Torrential rain has fallen in the city since Saturday, and low areas in the suburbs liavo been inundated. ISO extensive damage has been reported. Reports from the country indicato that the position there is more serious. In 'the Mangatawhiri Valley tho Pokeno-Paoroa main highway is under water for a considerable length. The road is impassable for motor traffic, and service car passengers have to transfer, being taken over the flood waters by horse and cart. In many other localities in this district the traffic is blocked.
The Waikato and Waipa Rivers are running high. The bridge oyer the Okete stream near Camp Ferguson on the Hamliton-Okete Road has been washed over the falls. Motorists can get through to Raglan by tho Kauroa Bridge, but the water is level with the decking and the foundations are threatened.
Road communication between Te Aroha and Paeroa is again blocked, and heavy ' floods are anticipated. Heavy rain for GO hours has flooded all tho rivers and streams. In the neighbourhood of Thames slips are reported in several localities. The rain lias eased off in tho city, but it is still falling in the country ■areas.
