COLLEGIATE RUGBY

SECOND FIFTEENS AT PLAY. WANGANUI WIN EASILY. Tho annual exchange of visits between the second fifteens of tho Wanganui College and Palmerston North High School materialised yesterday when Wanganui wore the visitors—the local seniors will visit Wanganui next Wed-nesday-—the locale of the contest being the High School ground which was somewhat heavy, while the high angular wind proved exceedingly troublesome. Tho teams which represented the respective schools were as under : Wanganui College (double blue): Allen, R. Kemp, Stewart, H. Kemp, Ludbrook, Palmer, O’Neill, Hudson, Kirkcaldie, Glendinning, Busby, Williams, de Gruchy, Ballin and Blundell. High School (blue and white): —McHaffie, Woodley, Penman, McKenzie, Harrowfiold, Elliott. Young, Campbell, Shaw, McGuire, O’Shea, Waldegrave, Nathan, Kyle, Clevely. High School had tho advantage of the wind at their backs at opening and, employing their frontal division, they immediately wont to the attack, a free kick right in tho corner relieving tho blues, but High School were quickly back and Wanganui submitted to a force down. From a scrum at midfield Young worked the blind side to hand on to Woodley, but the winger was halted just short of his objective. Following a period on the defence, Wanganui worked into foreign territory wliero they a taste of their dangerous qualities by throwing tho leather about from all positions. Although disappointed, the visitors returned and, from a scrum, Busby followed through on a short kick to beat a defender to the score. Williams made a good, but fruitless attempt to goal. Wanganui 3, High School 0.

Harrowfield was instrumental in setting tho home team on the aggressive and Nathan made a bold bid to bullock his way over the lino from q, succeeding scrum. The local forwards were displaying plenty of spirit, but the inside backs were indifferent, and the passing movements were invariably uncertain, Wanganui experiencing no difficulty in smothering them in their infancy. Exchanges between Allen and McHaffie, tile rival full-backs, left the advantage with tho local team and a fast follow up by Wodley saw the winger floor Allen and It. Kemp in close succession, but lack of finish prevented High School from turning their opportunities to account. Although High School had held 75 per cent or tho territorial advantage, the spell closed with the score reading tlireo points against them. WANGANUI ASSUME COMMAND. Although the High School forwards again went awy with a rush on resumption, it was very apparent that the visitors would overwhelm the home rearguard and one handling bout saw H. Kemp halted right in the corner, while from a further movement, which passed right across tho goal front, High School were veuy lucity to escape ,a crossing. Shaw and VValdegrave headed a clearing rush, but a counter onslaught terminated in a home player being penalised tor hand balling und Williams turned it to profit. Another three points quickly followed lor O'Neill worked the blind side from a scrum prior to handing on to Glendinning for the scrummager to go over wide out. The blues were now displaying plenty of confidence and were opening up at every opportuity, but the local forwards stormed back in great style, O’Shea losing possession when almost through. From, a movement in their own twenty-five tho blues swept to the other end where, from a line-out, Williams secured and threw himself over. His kick, however, failed. Before the repeated onslaughts the local backs were displaying uncertainty and H. Kemp accepted a puss out to out clean through the opposition and ground behind the posts for Williams to goal. Quite undaunted the home forwands, keeping tho ball at their toes, held the advantage for quite a petiod, but weak work by Harrowfield let Stewart away and a fumble by Eliott enabled the visitors to pile to the attack, a free kick bringing temporarily relief. However, tht blues wete quickly back in_ another effective handling bout, 11. Kemp .accepting a return pass to add another try. Williams goaled from well out and the final whistle found Wanganui comfortable winners by .a mangin of 22 points. Wanganui College 22, High School 0. Mr R. E. Hatch, who refereed, brought the wTiistle into play as little as possible. TARANAKI BEAT WELLINGTON. Per Press Association. HAWERA, July 4.
