HIGH HONOUR.
FOR FORMER PALMERSTONIAN. IN TASMANIAN CABINET. A high honour has been accorded a former Palmerstonian, MiV Heniy • Baker, who has been appointed Attor-ney-General and Minister of Educ. in the new Nationalist Cabinet of iasmania. Mr Baker- is a son of Rev. b. J. Baker, for some years Congregationalist minister in this tow) . received his early education a Terrace End School, proceeding ceipt of a junior free place in : to the High School. He reman ed there till 1907, having a place for the last three yeais. ent in school activities, lie was * her of the shooting team m 19 * member of the cricket XI. and Rugbj XV in 1907 and a non-commissioned officer in the school cadet coil also won several form prizes. On leaving school Mr Baker took up journalism, later abandoning t P suit for the law, which lie studied at the Tasmanian University, theie g ing his LL.B., and winning the BacK house-Walker prize in 1912. In W* he took his degree of Master of Laws with second-class honours. In I ary, 1915, Mr Baker enlisted in tlm A.I.F. and saw service in Egypt, °™ai, France and Belgium ■as a sergeantmajor. In 1917 he received a commas «ion. He was mentioned in despatches several times and was awarded the J) S.O. for conspicuous gallantry. Returning to Tasmania, at the conclusion of the War, Mr Baker was admitted as a solicitor and in 1920 practised at tli Victorian Bar. His only sister, Mrs iA. Smith, is a resident of Colyton ana his eldest brother, Mr S- .G. Baker, is chief sub-editor of the Dominion. Hie other members of the family are in Australia.
