Air L. O. H. Tripp was elected president of the Wellington Acclimatisation Committee at last night’s meeting.

The successor to Mr A. E. Fowler, who retired on May 31 from the position of Commissioner of Taxes, is Mr E. J. It.. Gumming, F.1.A.N.Z., at present deputy-commissioner. Mr I. E. Newton, M.A., principal of "Wanganui Technical College, lias been elected to represent principals of technical colleges on the New Zealand University Entrance Board.

A cable message from Melbourne announces the death of Mr Henry Michael Collins, for thirty years manager, also one of the founders, of Renter's Limited in Australia. General Sir Andrew H. Russell was unanimouslv re-elected president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association yesterday. Mr W. Perry was re-elected vice-president. The Administrator of the Mandated Territory of "Western Samoa (Colonel S. S. Allen) is on a tour of inspection of the island of Upolu. He is expected to return to Apia on June 20. Rev. James Ings, minister of St. David’s Church, To Aroha, arrived in England last month. He will represent the New Zealand Presbyterian Churches at the General Assemblies in Edinburgh. Mr Leo du Chateau, the prominent theatrical manager, visited Palmerston North yesterday and completed arrangements for the visit of Mr Alfred O’Shea, the famous Irish tenor, on Saturday, June 23. News has come from the East of the death of Rev. Father E. J. Mariette, ,a well known figure at Singapore. He was accidentally killed by a falling scaffolding plank that was being removed on the completion of a new cathedral, in the .creation of which the deceased had been closely associated. A veteran of the Crimean and Maori "Wars, Mr Thomas Skell.y, well known on this coast, died this week at the "Wanganui Hospital, aged 96 years. For a number of years he had been on a small holding at Ngamatapouri in the Waitotara district. Ho was 16 years of age when he enlisted prior to going to the Crimean War.

At the meeting of the Victoria College Council in Wellington last night, it was agreed to approve of the Professorial Board’s recommendation that the Sir Robert Stout Scholarship for 1927 be awarded to Mr A. C. Keys. The scholarship is of the value of £2O. Mr Keys, who obtained his B.A. degree this year, also gained a senior University scholarship in Greek, as well ns being runner-up in two other scholarships.

Cabled advice has been received by Archbishop, Averill that the Synod of the Diocese of Melanesia, sitting at Biota, British Solomon Islands, has unanimously chosen Bishop Molyneux, at present assistant-bishop, as successor to Bishop Steward (states an Auckland telegram). A delegation from Melanesia will be sent to meet the bishops of the province of New Zealand, with whom the. final selection rests. The selection will probably bo made in Wellington in August. At the conclusion of the annual conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association in "Wellington yesterday, officers were elected as follows:—Treasurer, Air J. D. Harper; executive, Messrs A. MeHutcheon and J. M. White (Otago); E. F. Wilcox and G. W. Lloyd (Canterbury), S. A. Carr and M. Aldred (Auckland). D. G. Munro, A. T. Duncan and C. W. Batten (Wellington); executive standing sub-committee, Mesrs Munro, Duncan, Batten, Perry and Harper; Canteen Regimental Trust Fund, Major hi. Aldred; New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr Newton McConachie; Mr J. J. Clark to be asked to represent South Africa War Veterans’ Association on the Dominion executive.
