FOXTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, May 23.

Mr H. Reid lias been elected coach of the Foxton juniors Rugby team. There was a good muster of players at the practice last evening. The Foxton committee has now got No. 1 ground oil the racecourse in good order, and by the end of this week No. 2 ground will be.marked out on a now site and ready for use. There will be two games oil the racecourse, on Saturday and the juniors will play on No. 2 ground. Stevenson’s leg is practically right again now and he will take the field for the juniors on _ Saturday. A special" meeting of the Foxton School Committee was held to -discuss matters relative to the levelling and turfing of the High School grounds. The plans and specifications were perused and no tender having been received, it was decided to leave tile matter in the hands of a Special committee to havo the work carried out. A start is to bo made immediately. Owing to the temporary closing of the local fiaxmills' a great number of men are unemployed, many with families to support. A number of the single men have left the district in search of work elsewhere. Local Freemasons journeyed to Shannon on Monday evening on the occasion of the annual installation ceremony. Representatives from Foxton were also present at a similar function held in Fcilding last night.

An important meeting, convened by the executive of the Fiaxmills Employees’ Industrial Union of Workers, will he held in Foxton this week to discuss matters relative to the flax industry, and also the advisability of requesting the Government to take over the Moutoa swamp and have same thoroughly cleaned out and planted in flax,- thus providing work for the relief of local unemployed. The condition of Mr A. Smith, ivhjj is an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital, has considerably improved. Mr A. Walsh, who was injured in a motor cycle accident last Saturday evening, is making good progress towards recovery.
