IN THE ICE-BOUND LANDS
MESSAGE FROM THE ITALIA. (United Press Association.—By ElecTelegraph..—Copyright.) (United Service.) Received May 24, 12.15 p.m. LONDON, May 23. A message from King’s Bay dated May 23 -states that tlie special correspondent aboard the. Italia sent the following wireless message prior to proceeding towards the Pole: “We spentmost of the time aboard tho City di Milano where there was every comfort. YVe were occasionally homesick and had to consult the clock and calendar in order to distinguish day from night. If we felt sleepy we had to consider it was bed time or rising time. It was a topsy turvey world; sleep time and work time intermingled. We might go for a brisk walk at 2 a.m. and were often abed at 3 p.m. in order to begin work at midnight. Breakfast was usually at the Ip.m. when the sun was already high. When the Italia is resting in the hangar six hundred gas containers weighing dozens of tons; must be taken across tho fields to re-' store buoyancy when in flight. Six hundred must be prepared against her return depriving Commander Romagna and the crew of all leisure. Thousands of gulls surround the City di Milano seeking the galley scraps —white gulls, sail to he tho souls. of dead sailors; black gulls, the souls of stokers. Seals and sea lions are tho favourite game; they are easily shot. The icc pilot skinned the smallest seal and supervised tho cooking, but he alone partook; it was a terrible meal.”
