EDUCATIONAL

HIGH AND TECHNICAL SCHOOLS. MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. The regular monthly meeting of the High School Board of Governors was held last evening. Mr AY. It. Birnie presiding. Also present were Messrs W. F. Durward, AV. T. Penny, O. Monrad, J. A. Nash, M.P., T. It. Hoddcr, AV. L. Fitzherbert and M. IT. Oram. The principal of the Girls’ High School, bliss F. J. Hodges, reported that the term ended May 5 closed with a roll of 208, tiro average attendance being 199. C. The second term commenced on May 22 with a roll of 207, there, being three withdrawals and two enrolments. There were at present 14 hoarders at the hostel. During the holidays, a party of 30 girls had been taken to Mount Cook and the trip should prove of considerable educational value to them. The rector of the Boys’ High School, Air J. Murray, reported that the second term had commenced that .afternoon.

A sub-committeo comprising Messrs Birnio and Durward was appointed to confer with the Technical School <lirector in the appointment of an assistant head teacher on an A grade certificate. Authority was also given for the appointment of a full-time commercial instructor.

The question of a new residence for the rector of the Boys’ High School was discussed in committee. Messrs Birnie. Durward and Oram were appointed to bring forward a report upon the proposed scheme ol secondary school control as it affected the board and the matter is to be discussed at a special meeting to be held later. The opinion was expressed by Mr Durward that, under the proposed system, it was possible for the board, as a whole, to lose office at an election and he thought that a board comprising all new members without any knowledge of school .affairs was not in the best interests of all concerned.

Accounts totalling £36 Is 3d were passed for payment.
