At yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu 'County Council the chairman Cr. W. E. Barber, and the county clerk, Mr A. IC. Drew, were appointed the council’s delegates to the forthcoming ccmfgrence of the Nsiv Zealand Counties’ Association. Mr Eoss Meikle, of Auckland, who recently was appointed manager of the Palace Theatre._ has had a varied theatrical experience both as a motion picture exhibitor and as an actorproducer. Mr Meikle has arrived in Palmerston North and has taken up his duties at the theatre. The relatives of the late Mr J. B. Haroourt, who 'had filled the position of president of the Wellington Racing Club for a long period of years, were at a meeting of the commjttee of the ' Manawatu Racing Club accorded a motion of sympathy in the loss they had sustained, the president, Mr (3. L-ouisson, paying tribute to the many splendid qualities oi the deceased gentleman. Mr Keith Peebles, who was admitted to the public hospital suffering from a head injury received in a Rugby match at Podding on Saturday, has now regained consciousness, but his condition remains serious. Mr Peebles is a younger member of a Woodville family which has furnished football circles with several players of prominence, while the name is likewise known in other branches of sports. The death of Dr. James Macpherson occurred at Hamilton on Saturday. Dr. 'Macpherson, who was 71 years of age, was born in Perthshire. Scotland, and, after coming to New Zealand, practised his profession in Dunedin. He served in the Medical Corps during the Great War and, on his return, was appointed to the medical staff of "the Porirua Mental Hospital. For several years prior to his death he was superintendent of the Tokanui Mental Hospital. There passed away at her residence, 201 Feathers ton Street, yesterday morning after a long illness Mrs A. E. McGregor, wife of Mr A. E. McGregor of this town, formerly chief postmaster at Hokitika, Westport, Gisborne, Napier and Dunedin. The deceased lady was the second daughter of the late George Brownlee, a well-known settler of North Otago, and after her marriage lived in Altaroa, the West Coast of the South Island, Dunedin and other places. She is survived by her husband, ono son, Mr G. I. McGregor, barrister and solicitor of this town, three brothers, Messrs George Brownlee, of Auckland, J. Brownlee, of Temuka, and W. G. Brownlee, of Oamaru, and two sisters, the Misses Brownlee, of Oamaru. At? the residence of his daughter, Mrs S. Russell Stephens', of-Arney Crescent, Remuera, Rev. Thomas David Charles Firmingor died on Sunday, aged 68 years. He had only lived in New Zealand about a couple of years and had been suffering from ill health. He was ordained a deacon of the Anglican Church in England in 1883 and a clerk in Holy Orders the following year. After spending a period in a charge at Bermondsey, lie was attached to the Cathedral at Hobart, Tasmania, Later he returned to England where he had several churches in Wiltshire 4 He was next appointed a chaplain under the Society from the Propagation of the Gospels. Afterwards he spent some time in London before he retired from active church work and came to New r Zealand.
